Can a person use a fartlek variation when racing 5K or 10K. That is run harder than race pace for 45 seconds or so and back-off to slower pace for 75 seconds to recover then repeat. If this is stupid or counter productive, why?

Fartlek for 5k/10k:
10 x 2:00 hard/2:00 easy (hard at 5k pace or faster)
10 x 3:00 hard/1:00 easy (hard at 10k pace or faster)
1:00 10k pace, 1:00 5k pace, 1:00 mile pace, 2 minute easy...hell I don't know just make it up.
All depends on what you mean by "fartlek". If you mean running repeats without running on the track then by all means go ahead. But, if you're training for a 5k/10k on the track then you should train on the track. Early season fartlek would be ok though.

Do you mean DURING the race or just in training?
