A conservative federal appeals court said Thursday that a federal law banning the sale of handguns to 18- to 20-year-olds is unconstitutional, elevating a significant question about the Second Amendment’s reach in the wake of...
If you are eligible for military service at 18, you are old enough to buy a gun. I’ve never owned a gun, but I will stand up for an individual’s right to own one. The overwhelming majority of gun owners are responsible. You can’t take the right away from everybody to stop the bad actions of a few (most of whom acquire their guns illegally anyhow).
I'm a "lib" but am also a gun owner. I have guns for CCW/home protection, sport, and hunting. This doesn't bother me so much as not doing extensive background checks. Guns should not be easy to obtain. I've seen 18, 19, & 20 year olds that are more responsible with guns than 50 year old chuckleheads. I have a feeling that the OP is one of those chuckleheads.
I'm a former NRA member and I've held a lifetime handgun carry permit for nearly a decade.
I would be in favor of limiting ownership and possession of handguns and semiauto rifles and semiauto shotsguns to adults age 25 and over, with exceptions available upon proven need. Examples of a proven need would be off duty military, law enforcement, first responders, jobs that include transporting cash or other valuable goods, and elevated risk due to celebrity or political status, litigation, etc. Almost no school shooters met any of these exceptions.
The rationale for this ban is that over 90% of school shootings are done by males age 25 and under. Ages 18-25 could still own hunting, sporting, and self protection bolt action rifles, single shot shotguns and pump shotguns with a limit to only four shotgun shells.
There also needs to be a crackdown on allowing youth on antidepressants to possess or own any firearm until they can prove that they have been off antidepressants for one year or until age 25.
The rationale is that prescription drug use is present in almost all school shootings.

Cities have tried the "need" aspect and SCOTUS has struck them down. It is incredibly subjective standard.
School shooters often get their guns from legal gun owners. Newtown shooter I think got the gun from his grandmother's house. Columbine shooters bought their guns illegally (the seller knew they were too young to buy them). There was no requirement at the time for a background check for sales at gun shows.
