kenya has lagat though ... ;)
johnny gray over the 1200
? or everett?
If we give Kenya Lagat and Kipketer (they were Kenyan when they ran their bests) then Kenya would definitely have the record.
The team (not in order) would be Lagat, Ngeny, Kipketer, and whoever is their best quarter miler. The 400m leg isn't that significant. USA would gain five seconds max, which wouldn't be enough to overcome the Kenyan middle distance advantage. The major decision for the Kenyan coach would be whether to put Ngeny on the 1200m or the 1600m. I gotta give Ngeny the edge in the mile/1500m given his record against Lagat during his good years, but Ngeny also ran that sick 1000m. I'd put Ngeny as lead-off and Lagat as anchor.
America might catch up to Kenya when Alan Webb runs a 3:45 mile. Until then, I think they have us Americans soundly trounced.
Britain may not be that bad with all of their great milers/800 runners. They probably have a few decent quarter milers as well.
I'd pick Great Britain and maybe Morocco before USA. MJ and Johnny Gray aren't enough to overcome the lead-off/anchor talent gap. Scott, Maree, and Webb would be your pool. Coe beats Gray and cuts into the MJ advantage, while GB still has Ovett and Cram for the lead-off/anchor. No US duo can match that on the basis of prs alone. Morocco has El Guerrouj on anchor, and credible 1200m/800m men to keep them in the race. If USA doesn't get more than a four second advantage from Gray and MJ then Morocco wins (3:43 miler vs. 3:47 miler).
*This is all in good fun. Please don't flame me if I got something wrong in either of my posts. I don't pretend to know everything about track so there's probably some factors I've overlooked.

1200 Cram
800 Coe
400 Redmond
1600 Ovett
one hell of a team, and you can still fit them all in the same era
Roger Black (UK) was a stud in his prime...winning silver in Atlanta.

Seriously...the guy you are replying to is a moron. 5 seconds at best?? Kipketer has gone out in 49 maybe 48 high in a 800 before. Unless America has a guy who can split 38.5 or something.

Yes, he could. I was further supporting the idea that no matter how fast MJ could run a quarter, Great Britain, with the support of Coe, Ovett and Cram, also have the silver medalist from Atlanta as a solid quarter miler and would destroy USA.

Distance Medley Relay--a three lap leg following by a one lap leg, next a two lap leg, then a 4 lap leg.
I would take webb off my 1200m team usa and put on spivey.
No Rick Wolhuter?
1200: Wolhuter or Krum
400: MJ
800: Gray
1600: Webb (in the next couple years) or Scott
