Hi Guys,
Bit of a lurker on here and would firstly like to say thanks for all the good advice that is smattered across this board!
Hopefully this isn't too much of a ramble but I am keen to progress my running in 2025 and beyond but at a bit of a loss for goals and guess I would like some general advice. Maybe I should get a coach but it seems a bit premature.
This is where I'm currently at.
I'm 36M. Started running in 2023 and ran 1000km, more consistent towards the end of the year and had a couple of months off (initial lack of motivation and a couple of minor injuries). Been pretty sedentary sports wise since teens although reasonably active walking and doing things. BMI 24.8 and I'm 5ft 10.5
2024 - 1500km, no injuries (stopped stretching before and after runs, go figure) and built up to 50km / week by the end of the year (December) with a few similar weeks in October/November. Typically an easy long run 15-17km with maybe a bit of pace within it, 8k easy, 12k easy, 6-8k tempo, 6-8k easy/tempo. No intervals or strides.
Tempo around 5:20/KM - 5:40/km pace the rest easy at around 6-6:15/km where my HR is around 160BPM (Max 203) I guess these easy runs should be even easier to get lower in Z2 but that is technically top end of my Z2.
2025 84km so far
Times: 10k - 50:29, 5k 23:31 (this was the final 5k of my 10k PB), HM 1:59:534 (big negative split averaging 5:17/KM in the last 7k and around 5:50/KM in the first 14k). Half was actually in November 2023 and haven't tried to beat it but run similar distances since.
All of these are just running around my neighbourhood, lots of tight turns, doubling back on myself and tight loops (i.e. continually running around a 200m car park!) so I wouldn't say any have been all out efforts although I pushed hard at the end of my half to get under 2 hours as illustrated above.
I obviously would like to improve these times and probably do a marathon at some point (longest run to date is 25km non stop, no fuel/water and did it in 2:28:58) but I want my main focus to be on getting to 80k / 50 miles a week constantly then I feel like the time will come.
Recently started foam rolling post run, massage gun and have just started a strength routine (Single Leg Glute Bridges, Romanian DL, Sideplanks, Planks, Single leg calf raises, Bird Dog)
So I guess this did turn into a bit of a ramble but I'm just looking for some general advice. I'm fairly confident I would PR all those times tomorrow if I was 'racing' them, probably not by a huge amount though but my main focus is to get to 80km / week reasonably quickly but obviously safely as I have become a bit obsessed with running and do not want to have to stop whatsoever! So contrary to what I said at the beginning that's probably my A goal but obviously it would be nice for my times to improve although I'm not obsessed with this and I guess that will just come with more volume. I guess introducing some speed work would help be but also not advisable whilst building to 80km/week? I would also like to complete an ultra at some point and maybe get that bug but don't want to start a plan for that specifically.
So I guess any advice/critique on what I'm currently doing, anything I could be adding/removing and where to go from here, and how?
One thing to note is I still smoke - about 5 a day (I know, I know) and vape (don't kill me) and obviously these need to go.
Thanks in advance!
