From the meet website: The race was named in honor of Rodman Wanamaker, owner of the Wanamaker department store. Employees of the Wanamaker branch in New York City organized the first Millrose Games in 1908. In the early days, the signature race of the meet was 1.5 miles, before it was shortened to one mile in 1926, and the Wanamaker Mile was born.
Here's a fun find from Wikipedia: In the 1929 Wanamaker, American athlete Ray Conger became the first and only athlete to defeat and upset "Flying Finn" Paavo Nurmi in the mile. Although Conger was modest about his win, he would be known as "the man who beat Nurmi" for decades.
Tough break for Adam Fogg. Unexpected and great 4th place last year in a breakout 3:49 after earning his spot through winning the Dr Sander mile, he hung on with Kessler and Mills. He mentioned through his youtube channel he hasn't been added to the field yet
World record watch! In the past two Wanamaker Miles Nuguse didn't really have anyone at his fitness level (Gourley and Kessler closest in 2023/2024 Wanamakers). With Kerr in the mix, Nuguse will be pushed and a Nuguse win isn't guaranteed.
I predict Kerr and Nuguse will push each other to a 3:46 indoor mile. As to who wins, I say whoever is drafting will win (just like in the 2 mile last year between Kerr and Fisher).
I'm sure after his 2 mile indoor WR last year, Kerr wouldn't mind adding the indoor mile WR to his repertoire.
I'd like to see Kess come into his own and put the woopin on these cats finally. He's easily a 3:25 high world record potential. More upside than even Hocker. This is his year to gain ground on the others and show he can beat em.

I'm all in on Yared getting the world indoor mile record and the win over Kerr. I feel like he's going to step up another level this year.
ya, people are sleeping on Nuguse, and for zero reason.
he has the 344 mile, abeit it was a free ride, a 327 0;01 behind Kerr, and all over the indoor mile record.
and Nuguse is on the upswing. and this nice guy is a quiet killer.
plus this guy has the greatest form all time. you actually look and see.
that said, Kerr is talking properly for a change, and appears to be peaking for this one.
all of which i don't understand, indoors back in the day was basically a bit of winter speed work, with the results being meaningless.
I think you got it wrong. Nuguse the filth can kiss me ass! Guy should never have been 0.01 behind Kerr in Paris after being whooped all season by Kerr in every race. Nuguse was already on the downswing in 2024 before Paris and will continue that downhill decline all the way to infinitum! Kerr with his blistering 3:44 hilly mile is on the clean upswing and will win this handily. He gets the world indoor record in 3:45 since his outdoor is probably 3:42 right now after fifth Avenue mile!
😆😆😆 Dude get real here, ain’t gonna happen. Hobbs performed so shameful at fifth Avenue mile we all thought he was on some otherworldly pill in comparison in Paris Olympics! A lot of the American middle distance guys just fell off spectacularly IRRECONCILABLY after Paris but Jakob and Kerr didn’t.
That’s how you know who are the real athlete from the fake ones.
