Made two worlds teams and ran 3:49. Probably realized with all the young studs coming up that his time in the sun was done. But always a guy you could count to be fighting for a spot on a time from late 2010s to early 2020s
I've followed him since he was in high school. My oldest son raced against him quite frequently so we've always felt a connection. It was a great career and I hope whatever comes next goes well.
He ran a 3:52 outdoors at the Bislett Games in 2019 (and in the amount of time it took you to write “….I’m not quite sure if he broke 3:54 outdoors”, you could have checked that). And if a runner clocks a 3:49 point, they are absolutely identified by the track world as a 3:49 miler. Track times are not rounded up, and tracks are either legal or not legal.

Added word.
I was coached by him a few years ago. Dude was a good coach, down to earth, and always willing to listen and take my ideas as peers. Amazing person through and through, hope he finds retirement a seamless transition!

You are really ignorant. He was a 3:52 miler who ran a fluke time on a carnival track.

Ignorant? I’ve corrected you twice thus far. And you’ll love this — the World Athletics Congress converts Gregorek’s 3:49.98 Mile Sh (1263 points) to a 3:45 Mile Outdoors. Great job, Johnny!
Somebody didn’t understand the explanation. Read it again.
When indoor tracks are deemed illegal, you can come back to this thread and gloat. Until then, Gregorek is a 3:49 miler.
There is no asterisk next to "indoor times" the way there would be in a downhill mile, for example.
It doesn’t matter. Anyone with an IQ above 120 can see the truth. Look at Kejelcha. He was NEVER a 3:47 miler except in some fantasy world. Just as Gregorek was never a 3:49 miler. It doesn’t matter what you think, or the other jokers.

But why does a race have to be outdoors for it to count? That is what I am not understanding.
You are right that these guys might have been better indoors. Does that matter? If I ran my marathon PR on a track, it would still be 26.2 miles, right? Why does the "venue" matter so much? These surfaces are legal and have been around for ages.
