Guessing it was called a 2 minute warning back when the game clock wasn't visible. There's no reason to call it a warning any more because everyone can see the clock.

Why do you think someone was offended by it? There are other reasons things happen.
The purpose of the two minute warning in the NFL, decades ago, was to notify the teams that the game was nearly over. The referee was the only person with access to the official clock. The name, in the NFL, is outdated, since everyone can see the game clock and has been able to for decades.
In the NCAA, the two minute timeout was added this year. Its purpose is to provide an extra timeout, to give trailing teams a chance to come back.
The difference has nothing to do with people being offended. It is because the rules serve a different purpose.
