Dec. 23—President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday said he wants to change the name of the highest mountain in North America from Denali back to Mount McKinley. Alaska's two Republican U.S. senators, Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sulliv...
Thank God (aka Trump)! I am sick of these woke leftist and their anti-American agenda. I hope he changes the name of the ridiculously named “Mt. Blue Sky” back to the much more appropriate “Mt. Evans” as well. Polis and the wokes should’ve never been aloud to change that name, amirite joedirt?
We won the mountain from the Indians so we should get to name it whatever we want. Maybe the Indians shouldn't have brought bows and arrows to a gun fight.

The problem with the "Presidents Range" as this was known, is that the original names are way, way cooler. Mt. Adams, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. McKinley, etc are just not creative nor are they related to the mountains themselves. It isn't as if Jefferson ever saw Mt. Jefferson.
As for most of the other peaks in the far West, I just read the history of the naming of a bunch of these mountains and honestly, the guys who did it could not have been any lazier.
Seriously, the explorers Cook and Vancouver (and others) just cruised their ships along the coast and spewed out the names of the fat old men who paid for the expedition. The names, mostly, have no connection to any real history. Someone on a boat saw a peak, named it after a guy back in England.

Many state high points use local indigenous names. For instance, Harney Peak was renamed to Black Elk Peak in South Dakota. Clingman's Dome was recently renamed to Kuwohi in Tennessee. Mt. McKinley being renamed to Denali is the same trend as these peaks. Katahdin in Maine must also use a local name.
I'm surprised Mt. Rainier hasn't been renamed to "Tacoma" yet. I support using the local name over the western name as this helps raise awareness of a local culture and the spiritual beliefs surrounding a mountain. Denali means "The Great One" or "The High One".
Outside the U.S, Mount Everest is an interesting example. The official peak's name is of course Everest, but the national parks on both the Chinese and Nepalese side of the peak bear the local name (i.e: Qomolangma and Sagarmatha).
