Going to Denmark this summer

I went there when I was 18 (4 yrs. ago) for the summer. It was the best summer of my life! The party scene is unreal. Liberal attitudes, drinking in the street is legal, it's easy to get laid, so many blondes. It was unbelieveable. The Danes are the partiers of Scandanavia. Sweedes, Fins, Germans, and Norwegians go there for a good time.

With such a great social scene I found it tough to stay focused on running.

I do remember Coopenhagen having some 5k roadraces in July.

I've never been to Copenhagen, but I've been to Malmo and Lund, Sweden, just across the bridge from Copenhagen, and I had a great time there!!!!

Something tells me you already know it's good for partying and boozing so why ask? Just remember, although the minimum alcohol serving age (there's no minimum drinking age per se) is 18, some bars and clubs don't admit anyone under 21 or 25. Many do, though, so just do your research or rely on your friend.

Most popular running trail is around the four man-made lakes just west of downtown. It's only 6.5km or so around but you can go north-east from there and to "Kastellet" which is a nice green area. All depends on where your friend lives, if (s)he is in the suburbs there may be better running around there.

I spent a semester abroad in Copenhagen and ran pretty seriously while there. Take the H train out to Vaerlose or Farum. There are three huge lakes in the area with gravel trails all the way around them. Let me know if you want more specific directions.

The Danes certainly like their beer. Check out Christiania for a true 1960's experience.

Great training on lots of wooded trails and paths. The weather will be in the low 60 in June and 70's in July. perfect for base training. Also there are former runners from Western State training and racing around Copenhagen. North of the city is the best training were the prince lives ( I can't think of the name of the town about 25min from the city). English is not a problem since a lot of people speak it.

The Danish women might be the most beautiful in the world. Every 10 seconds I was saying to myself, "no, THAT'S the new hottest chick in the universe."

Most of my time was spent playing soccer so I didn't get to do too much tourist stuff, but I was surprised at how much open space there was. I had always imagined Europe as much more crowded, but everywhere I went there were country roads that were great for running.

You can buy beer in at age 15, at least that's what I witnessed in a Texaco station. You can buy hard spirits there too. The Danes are crazy partiers who smoke and drink alot.

Denmark is pretty cool. Spent my honeymoon there. The people are very friendly and will willingly speak to you in English. The Copenhagen Jazz Fest (in July) is outstanding. Lots of free shows streetside. Christiana isn't a great part of town, but there are hash bars, so I'd say the partying scene is solid. For runs, expect very flat terrain and summer temps in the 50-65 degree (F) range. You'll probably have the time of your life. Enjoy.

There are a shit-ton of little races everywhere if you don't mind hopping a train, and the party scene IS outrageous.

Just make sure you get your run in first thing in the morning (or immediately after you wake up), or it's not going to happen.

I was just in Denmark this past winter/spring and I can definately agree on running in vaerlose because it's where I lived. Definately well worth it to take the train out there from the center of the city, but it will cost you almost 10 bucks. Good for a long run though if you really want some good trails. No matter where you live though you should not have too much trouble finding somewhere to run. Just watch out for the bikes! go to the rosklide fesivial in july (a danish woodstock). Drink as much tuborg and carlsburg as possible. Other than that I highly recommend you work on getting danish babes. From the outside the appear difficult to crack, and their looks are intimidating, but if you can make them laugh (they have a great sense of humor) you're in. Have a great time in Denmark dude.

Check out the newly built Amager Strand, or Amager Beach, a few kms ESE of the center of town, out on the island of Amager.

There's a long walkway along it and you can check out the topless girls and run all the way to the airport if you want.

In Sep 1997 I was there and ran a midnight 10k. It was part of a country-wide sports night. They had a 5k also and the crowds were huge. We ran under a temporary bridge in the walking streets where the drunks threatened to piss on us. Great fun!

I met some runners from the local club called PINT, which is Danish for "to suffer." Look for them.
