Taylor, Orme, Heemeyer, Carr, Herd from Centennial and then a couple other girls will break 5.

I think Taylor wins 2 of the 3 titles. Stadtlander wins 800 and 1600, Sheesley wins 3200.

6A has 80 boys break 4:40. 71 broke it last year, 45 are returning, and the 80th returner is at 4:50.01. It will be close to 150 boys breaking 4:40 this year- 121 did it last year. We might see 45 boys in 6A break 10- 37 did it last year, and 25 returners are back. The 45th returner is at 10:15, there are 50 returners sub 10:20. Overall, it should be around 90 that break 10 this year.

Idaho is deep. I imagine that we will see boys that have run right at or under 9:30 not go to the state meet in District III.

I think the fastest returning 3200m averages will be CDA, Rocky, Eagle, Mountain View, Skyline, Boise in just about that order and there will be a lot of positive momentum moving into next cross country season for those teams. Highland may also have a pretty fast set of returners.

Oh, and Rocky has 30+ boys break 5:00. Haters will say (correctly) there are a lot of seniors, fans will say (correctly) that they are one of the deepest teams in the country.

I don’t think having a lot of people break 5 will be help a boys team make NXN, because to make it, much more needs to be done than run a sub-5

Yeah, I don’t think track will leave people thinking the returners will qualify for NXN. People might point to past track results for guys like Tuft but that’s ignoring he actually has cross results. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Mountain View be the most hyped Idaho team after CDA coming out of this track season.

I think sub 5 is a pretty good indicator for a team like Rocky, but not a good one for a smaller team like CDA.

Rocky always has like 15-25 boys break 5 each year, so I think that if we have a year where only 10 guys did it, it would be a pretty good indicator that the team is going to be weak in the upcoming cross season.

That being said, the Rocky guys are really bad at impressing on the track. The totality of their depth is always crazy, but looking at the individual times, I've always thought that they are underwhelming when you consider where they came from in cross.

It's probably a symptom of the way coach Howard progresses his guys, a contrast to most high school teams where they are much better on the track (mostly because they are underdeveloped).

Rocky hasn't had less than 20 boys break 5 minutes in the 1600 since before COVID.

Over that same time, I think you could probably count on one hand the number of Rocky boys that were legit scoring pieces in cross country that didn't have some serious track chops as well.

2021 XC had Trent Wigod, Landon Heemeyer, Keith U, Zach Pollock and Tyler Sainsbury as their top 5 at state.
2022 had Landon Heemeyer, Tyler Sainsbury, Keith U, Cody Lucas, and Hunter Hill as their top 5 at state. The worst set of PR's heading into the season was Cody Lucas as a 4:36 freshman.
2023 had Landon Heemeyer, Cody Lucas, Hyrum Tuft, Pierce Richardson, and Jacob Thomas as their scoring 5. The worst set of PR's was Richardson as a 4:40/10:07 guy.
2024 had Cody Lucas, Hyrum Tuft, Parker Goggins, Jacob Thomas and Thomas Kurtz as their top 5 at state. The worst set of PR's was Jacob Thomas as a 9:51 guy.

Since COVID, their top 5 at state cross all had legit track PR's heading into the season. Saying anything other than that is moving the goal posts quite a bit.

good enough to make them competitive in cross on the state level, but not at NXR. Last year Rocky had a ton of sub-5s in the spring, but in cross they were 5-deep, and one of their top 5 had an off race at NXR, which cost them a trip to NXN. Same thing happened to them in 2022.

Next cross season I don’t see Rocky placing top 4 at NXR. CDA, Jesuit, Bozeman, and Mercer Island are all looking to be better than them. CDA and Jesuit are losing only 2 seniors and Bozeman / Mercer Island are only losing 1. Rocky is losing 4.

It's been said in other threads before, but Rocky is more likely to get 4th at the state meet than 4th at NXR based on returners.

CDA and Mountain View will very good. Boise, Eagle, Highland, and Centennial have plenty to be disruptive. It's the first time in years that they aren't clearly the 1st or 2nd best team for the next year coming out of cross.

Yeah Eagle will be a team to watch out for. They only lose one person from the state meet, and they also have a transfer who would have scored for them but was ineligible because he is a transfer

Yeah their sophomore class is good. 10:14 freshman that broke 16 at the state meet, 10:04 freshman that ran 16:23 this fall, and their transfer that ran 4:42 and 10:15 as a freshman at their previous school. On paper, should be their best team ever.

To that point- since COVID, Pierce Richardson has, on paper, been the guy that finished in Rocky's top 5 that had the worst set of PR's the year before. I would be curious how many teams have ever had a #5 returner that has been that fast. I'm guessing the only schools might be CDA, Rocky, Boise, Mountain View, Idaho Falls and maybe Timberline?

CDA took 3rd at Nike Indoor nationals in 2024.
This year they return Carr and Cervi-Skinners from that squad.

But they will need to replace King with someone. Rietze doesn’t do indoor track, and no idea if he will this year

Rietze just ran a race in Spokane. CDA boys went 4:18, 4:20, 4:33, 4:40, 4:43 for the full mile without Max racing. Rietze was the 4:33- converts to a 4:31 1600. He’ll be a 4:23-4:24 boy by indoor Nats.

Happens every year. When you have 60+ boys on your squad, some of them are bound to improve a lot.

Do we know of any transfers happening this spring/summer? The addition of Hunter Hill to Rocky is what took them from a top 25 team to a top 10-12 back in 2023.

I imagine that if CDA gets a transfer it's game over for the rest of the northwest. Rocky, Mountain View, Boise, or Eagle getting a transfer could put them in the mix come fall, of course depending on their track results.

Hill did transfer to Rocky Mountain in 2022. For 2025, it’s looking to be a rebuilding year for them. Even if they do get one transfer, that won’t be enough and it will still be tough for them to crack even the top 4 in the NW. CDA, Jesuit, Bozeman, and Mercer Island all look really strong.

I think CDA can win NXR Northwest again even if they don’t get a transfer. Their group of top 5 returners is already solid as is.

The real question is if Parr-Coffin (current 8th grader, 4:28 mile / 8:51 3k) will be running of CDA. There were multiple mentions that he concentrates on Wrestling.

Rocky wouldn’t have been a top 25 team in 2022 if Hunter Hill wasn’t there. They would have been 5th (and very nearly 6th) at NXR if he wasn’t there since Hyrum Tuft was 71 points back from him.

If any of the four above mentioned teams got a 9:32 transfer, they would be considered as a stacked team next year. Hunter Hill was one of the best transfers in the country that year.

Let's not forget that Rocky has never made the preseason Tully or Dyestat rankings aside from the watchlist, yet have been top 5 in the Northwest 5 times since 2018. When you have as big a team as Jeff Howard has to work with, you don't have distinctive rebuilding years unless your program is on the downfall.

CDA should absolutely win the Northwest again. A 3-peat would be really cool for a smaller (for 6A) school up north. Coach Carr has taken them to a really dominant place.

For track, I think fantastic results for CDA would be putting 2 under 9, and all of their varsity squad under 9:30.

I really think that the valley this year is going to pop off. Rocky will have like 25-30 sub 5 boys, which is nice, but at the top level, it's going to be insane. The Boise meet last year was insane to watch with Stadtlander, Kemper, Lucas, Sheesley, and Helder all going under 4:20 on a random Friday afternoon midway through the track season.

It wasn't that long ago that there were only 4-5 guys in the entire state who would break 4:20 throughout the season, let alone in the same race that didn't count for much.

When the CDA guys get to clash with the valley guys, I think we'll see multiple sub 4:10 times, but I'm doubting that any of the guys will break 4. It's going to be a great season.
