until Smith learns to run economically and loses some weight, I doubt he has much future in the 1500m. No a 4.11 mile doesnt count even with a 1.54 last 800m.

He also ran 3:59 and 4:02 indoors, the latter being just a step behind Dan Lincoln.

uhhh...from watching Smith in this year's indoor NCAA's - he looked like a talented guy with lots of speed who would benefit (formwise and otherwise) from a sustained block of Lydiard type distance running. Just a thought.

I am surprised that no one interested in 6th place. A 44 second 400 meter runner moving up to the 800 who, a month ago (i think), was running 1:54-1:56 all out in races.

if there as ever a "400 guy who should run the 800" this is it.

Smith does have some unorthodox form, but I don't think you've seen him recently. The guy doesn't need to lose any weight. He looked very skinny at KU. He waited a bit too long to start his kick there, caught Mims on the final straight, but didn't have enough track left to get Hicks.

I'm willing to bet you have no idea how he trains, but I'm sure you could coach him to much better though.

He broke 4 indoors. I'd say he has a future.

Christian Smith is going to run 3:57 or better this year. It's not so much about your upper body; it's how efficient your stride is. So next time, check out his stride. Coach Mike Smith knows what he's doing. The guy coached me from a 1:58 guy to a 1:52 in a year....and I sucked.

Smith\'s pr last year for the 1500m was 3:43, so it\'s not like he hasn\'t any experience. Plus he did run 3:59 and 4:01 indoors. Nationals just might come down to Smith and Lancashire(who ran 1:46.99 a couple weeks ago).

What's interesting here is that former outdoor NCAA 400m champ Adam Steele is delving into the 800. He was primarily a 200/400 guy, so seeing him taking on the 800 is awesome.

Hope to see him run more 800s. 1:49 is an awesome start.

Wait a minute...this is letsrun.com. Shouldn't there be some jackass calling for Smith to move up to the 5k because he's got great speed?

Just like the idiots who want Webb to move up to 10k, when he's already a top competitor in the mile.
