This year, after focusing on the 5000/10000 throughout college, I decided to drop down to the steeplechase. I had been a decent hurdler in high school and we always ran drills over hurdles throughout college, so it just seemed like a good event to experiment in my first year out of school. As a little bit of recent background, I've maintained my mileage from my days in college, averaging around 70-75 miles a week for the past 9 months. I've also been running similar workouts with similar times and I appear to be pretty fit, running 14:50 at the end of my brief indoor season. I've also worked over long distance with my school's hurdling coach and have gone over approximately 1000 hurdles in the past 6 months.
The problem is, I am struggling over the water pit and by the 3rd or 4th lap I am no longer generating the force off of the barrier. As a result I'm no longer landing in stride and it looks more like I'm jumping into a pool rather than rolling off the barrier. I've spoken to my old coach about it, but with very little background in coaching the steeple he has not been of much help. I've gone through many of the more popular steeple links on here including Coach Hislop's and I haven't really found anything of value with dealing with my problem.
I was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of some workouts to do in order to generate the power to get off of the barrier and land with only one foot in the water. Increased mileage, strength training, other ideas? Can someone help me out so that I can reformat my program for the next year as I likely won't gain much of a benefit from adding something new this late in the season.
