I'm in complete agreement about training the body for the acid buildup, but was wondering if taking antacids would also help buffer/delay the buildup of acid. If I was sufficiently trained and ready to 4-flat for the 1500, could using such an antacid be the difference between 4 and 3:59?
I'm merely asking the question, haven't done it. Yet...
In theory, the antacid should work, although the actual amount of the antacid that gets broken down and into your blood won't raise your blood pH any. Sodium citrate, however, will. As mentioned, there are GI problems associated with it, so try it in practice first....a few times and make sure there's a bathroom close by and you don't mind burping. I have found a teaspoon diluted in a litre of water, 2 hrs before warm-up to be okay.
