Vin Lananna is a good manager but a bad coach

I love these bitter threads. Both men and women finished 4th, Martin crushed when it mattered. All these haters and Vin is still going strong, earning a paycheck. Brosnan bros meanwhile go home devastated.

This is an odd thread to make about someone whose team won the men's ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championship, who coached Shane Cohen to the NCAA 800 track championship, who was named ACC Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year, named USTFCCA Southeastern Men's Track and Field Coach of the Year, and just had two guys in the top 5 at the ACC cross country championships, including the winner. All those things happened this year.

Vin Lananna is in his 70’s and he did a good job getting Gary Martin , but most recruits realize his time has past and not currently a good coach or someone they want to run for. UVA is not much better with Lananna than they have been over the years without. He’s a sleezy car salesman that sells snake oil. The list of enemies he’s made over the years is endless. He told athletes that UVA would be winning NCAA’s in cross country in a few years and that’s obviously a huge exaggeration.

I like that he's building the program the right way. He's not taking shortcuts by importing a bunch of Kenyans like some other schools or by fielding a team full of guys who are 24 and older like BYU.

To be fair, as someone who has coached against Vin and dislikes him, I don’t believe his is a sleezy recruiter at all (like Carlson etc). I think he genuinely believed they were going to win an NCAA title because he is delusional and his brain is still in 2003 when the sport in the NCAA was completely different.

so you don't think he builds the program the right way? I'll accept the way he does it rather than the snake oil salesman at New Mexico that just went out and bought a full African team.

Stanford was never coached by Lananna? He is one of the best college coaches in history. He has done very well with Footlocker champs and with people who couldn't win state. The same could be said for Wetmore, Vigil, and literally any other coach who isn't able to compete with these all star African teams or just cant adjust to the NIL era of college.

Lananna is a hack that has made enemies because of the way he treats people. Just ask Dunbar and his girl. They Bit@h about VL to other coaches all the time.. Working with him has to be a absolute nightmare
