at the 2005 Texas Relays Jonathan Johnson ran the first lap of his DMR leg in 48.low... he opened a huge lead...then ran the last lap in 60 seconds for a 1:48.x split with a 12 second positive split..
it was comical..its the fastest lap of an 800m i have ever seen in person..
I've got it on tape. When Wilson Kipketer broke the World Recrod the first time he went through in 48.10 FAT. I would have to check, but I believe he finished at 1:41.25
He also came through 200m in 22.9 or 23.0 - that's pretty damn sick.
hell wish i could find something like that on the internet
I would kill to see the Kipketer race on video. Any ideas?

yes. killing is bad.
Kipketer was lead by Joseph Tengelei for the first 400 of his WR in Zurich in 48.6 (with Tenegelei - not FAT, splitting 48.40).
His later WR in Köln was 49.40, nearly a second slower. Possibly the most perfect 800m speed trial of all time.
The Italian Longo went through in 47 something once back in the day, but he was a drug cheat. He was even ridiculed by the commentators for going out so hard. Still hung on for a 1:44 or 1:45 but got mowed down pretty bad by the field. I think the race was in Italy in front of a home crowd.
Dedrick Jones, of the JacksonvilleCC/University of Florida, he was a 7-0+ HJ and a 1:47 800 meter runner Back in 1990 or 91. At the Junior College Nationals he ran a high 1:5.... in the final...it was bad he went out in 47.7.
his last split was in the 60's

In Coe's WR he split 49.69.
in south lakes' 2001 aoc 4x800 win, richard smith split a 1:53.0 going 50.0-63.0 (hand timed, obviously). while not as fast as coe or kipketer's laps, he was only a hs junior at the time.
I split 51.X in the opening leg of a 4x8 (and came back in about 59/60.) I had no business doing that, as that was within a second of my 400 PR. oh how my muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid on that second quarter.
I do rember a story about 2 or 3 years back about some college kid seeing how fast he could go out.. i dont think he wa a top 800 runner at the time, but went out in 46 point.. i belive he also finished just under or maybe a little over 1:50. he was a 45 second 400 guy with an 800 pr of around 1:54.. this could ahve just been heresay.. but.. that woudl have been disgusting to see his lead at the 400 mark.
I've gone 52/61 for a PR before and one time 51/60 (1:50 flat PR at the time).
My final PR was 54/55 (1:49.76).
The 52/61 I was in last place at the 400 and in way over my head.
The 51/60 was a SMR at Penn where our second leg dropped the baton and I got the stick DFL chasing Tony Parrilla among others.
So what's the fastest closing 400m in in 800?
michael johnson once went out in 43-44, but stopped after only runniing one lap.
never did get around to running the full distance.
A kid running JV 800 at our district meet ran 59-93 last weekend for a 2:32. True story.
That's awesome.
I saw a kid run 60/1:43 for a 2:43 about a month ago.
Saw I guy go 53 and end up at 2:17. He towed everybody through waaaay too fast.
I went 56 high and 65 for 2:01 in the same race - I made up a spot on lap 2. The 56 high was = to my 400m PR.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
Great interview with Steve Cram - says Jakob has no chance of WRs this year
