Let's not get carried away. They are a good training group for the marathon and road races of half marathon and above...don't forget there is track, cross country and shorter distance road races where other U.S. training groups do much better. Plus you're only talking about the men's team here - the Hansons women are not performing very well compared to other training groups. Remember that Meb and Deena - who are both Olympians and top world class marathoners, track and cross country runners - are from the California training group.
OK, so how many OTHER training groups are there in the US?
Team USA Minnesota is pretty good.
if hansons = brian sell olympic development project, then yes. but let's see, their 2;12 guy can barely break 2;20 now, their number 2 guy has basically flatlined the last three years.
Didn't they just put 7 guys in the top 22 at Boston?
They did put 7 guys in the top 22 at Boston but that doesn't tell it all. Normally that would be a great accomplishment but many dropped out this year due to the suicidal pace. They had 2 guys run personal best and the other 5 ran slower than their best. Clint was within a minute of his personal best. Luke dropped around 3 minutes off his personal best. Chad ran over 3 minutes slower than his personal best. Kyle ran within a minute of his personal best. Trent ran around 8 minutes slower than his personal best. Sell ran over 2 minutes faster than his personal best. Marty ran within a minute of his personal best.
Hanson's has been putting up competitive numbers in the marathon but I would put Team USA Minn at the top of the heap with doing the best all around job with their limited resources. Hanson's is like the farm team. They do a good job at the longer stuff like the Farm team does at the shorter stuff.
All are helping to keep people training. That is something to be thankful for.
It seemed to me that some of their guys just ran together to hit the Trials A-Qualifier. Which I think all but 1 did.
You are incorrect.
Trent and Marty just were not in good enough shape. Kyle was out at least the first half at 2:16-:17 pace.
Chad was the only guy looking just to qualify. He paced Clint and Luke and was suppose to drop but continued probably for that reason of qualifying.

Dont' forget about ZAP Fitness, not known for marathoners, but have quit a few 5k studs.

I don't know where they set their personal bests, or if you are comparing their times to a prior boston. If you are talking about their bests, the difficulty of the Boston course must be taken into account. A PR at Boston, or even being within a few minutes of a PR, is a success
Bottom Line... The Group/Team concept works... They allow college grads to continue running. With smart training we (the U.S.) can get to the top. I stopped serious training after college. I wanted to eat and live for a change... I wish the current new wave of groups had been around 30 years ago...

I was just thinking the same thing. Our basic education system is severely lacking in this country. We should be very worried about China and India, because we are dumbing down rather rapidly...
'difficulty of the Boston course'???
um, its downhill dude...aided all the way
if you run it smart its a smokin fast course.

MY GOD - STOP POSTING YOU IDIOT!!!!!! I thought Dunes Runner was dumb, but you are dumber.
If I remember correctly...there is a training group Terrence Mahon runs out in Cali that according to Running Times has Ian Dobson, Ryan Hall, Sara (Bei) Hall, Ryan Shay, Gabe Jennings, this might be the group that Meb and Deena are also part of...I forget.
smokin fast ?

Correct, Bum.....
Boston is not a easy course to RACE. A smart runner will let the non-smart runners get to the start of the Newton Hills with a lead, or let them run the hills too hard....Then put the "pedal to the metal" and smoke on to the end... Boston is a great course because the 4 or 5 mile uphill section comes just as you have run out of glycogen and are starting to run totally on fats...
The only course as great was the Athens Olympic course.
I think whats impressive about the Hanson\'s is there have taken many unknown college athletes and helped them improve tremendously. Many of the other clubs as I see them, have some stud NCAA Champs (male and female) that offers a leader to the group. In the Hanson group, they had to develop that leader. They are old school...they train hard and aren\'t afraid to race. My hats off to them.
