The guy who won Mr Olympia's last week-end (bodybuilding most sought after event) a Brit, took home a big prize money of $600000, the runner-up, from Iran took home $250K, the 3rd, 100K.
In comparison Tadej Pogačar earned & Jonas Vingegaard, won 500K€ ($534K) & 200K€ ($213K) for being 1st and 2nd in the last TDF.
Even if you add stages wins, considering that each stages is worth 11000€ ($11750) and Pogačar won a record 5, it still does not reach Mr Olympia's payout.
The question is how and why, I always saw bodybuilding as a cult yet the prize money are not ridiculous at all. How does this 'sport' sustain itself at the pro level?
You would have thought that the TDF, a 3 week-event ridden with advertisements (the cyclists themselves are basically walking ads) and with hundred of millions of potential viewers (how many people tune in to watch Mr Olympia?) could reward much more than that ?
PS: I know the total prize money of the TDF s higher because there are much more people to reward , but still ($2.5M vs $1.6M)
