World Records never last and when Ingy last won a 1500 global championship there was only one strong competitor (Tim Cheryot). Now there are 3 -5 legit top competitors plus others banging on the door. ...and they are each much faster than Ingy over 800 meters.

-Kerr: World gold, Olympic silver and bronze, 3:45 mile 3:27.7 1500m
-Hocker: Olympic gold and 3:27.6 1500

It is not a discussion, the final say is the WA ranking lists for determining who is best. Doesn’t matter who wins on one day. Jakob could remain as # 1 even if he loses once.

I think that high level achievements like world records, Olympic golds, and world golds will determine it historically. If Jakob continues to lose global championships he would need the world record to be considered “the best”, even a 3:26.5 wouldn’t cut it, especially if Kerr or Hocker repeat giving them multiple consecutive global championship victories over him.

Why do you and other posters, call them “milers” when they only race a mile one time a year?

Yes I think this will be decided more by the 2029 season conclusion. Jakob is in the lead and young. Kerr is second but older. Hocker has a lot of upside given how limited by injury his career has been. There’re others like Nuguse/Laros/Kessler who can factor. 2025 doesn’t seem to be a huge one as while Jakob will dabble in 2026 maybe, I don’t think he’ll move up for good until 2030 ideally in his mind.
If Laros, or even Kessler start to win the global titles, I think it will be seen as a new generation, with maybe Hocker's win in Paris the start of it, and the end of the Tim, Wightman, Jakob, Kerr era.
