Growing Kenyan List of Shame

It's a disease that has spread to the whole area. I'd agree Kenya should be temporarily banned and good behavior/improvement needed to be demonstrated for reinstatement.

It all started with greedy/lying coaches/agents being complicit with doping because they profited financially from the dopers who won a lot of money. These coaches/agents were already exploiting poor athletes with limited financial knowledge for more money than they deserved to take.

Suppose you had athletes you suspected but could not prove of doping. How long would you want them to be in a framework with regular reliable testing before you could reasonably be sure most of the benefits of doping overseas had worn off?

Seb Coe - do the right thing and ban Kenya. Send a message loud and clear that systemic doping has far reaching consequence.

The enablers… coaches, agents to these athletes that get busted need to go down in shame and be put in jail. The drug dealers, pharmacists that enable need to put in jail. The problem is these people are mafia and threaten the athletes their family etc.

I don't know the answer to that. But look at Kipruto's case, DT decision from 28 May 2024, with blood doping at least between 9 July 2018 and 15 March 2022 (off-scores between 64 and 125, HGB up to 17.9 g/dl!), yet they let him compete all the way until 11 May 2023. During that time, he set the 10k WR, ran 26:50 at Worlds for bronze, ran a 57:49 half marathon, and won several races. All DQ'd. but still...

Also most of his blood tests were not suspicious - meaning a bit smaller injections/transfusions or fewer tests, and he would have been able to keep going...

When I counted fast athletes (men faster than a 1990 benchmark) between 1990-2018, I counted:

226 Kenyans, 88 Ethiopians, 27 other East Africans, 22 Moroccans, 8 Algerians, 8 Americans, 24 non-Africans from 13 countries, and 0 Russians/Soviets.

This means for every 100 fast men distance runners, 56% of them would be Kenyan, 22% would be Ethiopian, 6% would be East African, 8% would be North African, 2% would be American, and 6% would be the remaining non-Africans.

This is a great post. Somebody else mentioned how difficult it is to find information about Kenyan athletes, such as who their coach is. Many times, the Wikipedia pages of banned Kenyans haven't even been updated with a reference to their doping.

You could also add World Junior Champions to the list. Here is a very incomplete list. I didn't look at the women, but I know there have been at least 2 or 3 banned.

Soloman Lekuta (800m - 2018)
Kipyegon Bett (800m - 2016)
Kamari Taku (1500m - 2014)
Alfred Kipketer (800m - 2014)

And Rhonex Kipruto who is already in the list.

I looked at the ADAK decision on Soloman Lekuta. It's quite an interesting read. He tested positive for steroids. He claimed he didn't know how to use e-mail, and only communicated with his manager by WhatsApp. He also claimed to be a training partner of Faith Kipyeogan, but I can't see the any mention in the document as to who his coach is.

So Kenyans are doping their heads off, even now when they are getting tested, but it surprises you that they were faster than everybody else when there was no testing? Perhaps you need to re-think your 'epo doesn't work' starting premise?

And to all the other doping apologists who now can't deny that there is rampant doping in Kenya, and so fall back on the line that - "Kenya are the only ones testing their athletes", take a look at this.

Kenya narrowly escaped a ban at the start of 2016, because they still hadn't got a functioning anti-doping agency there yet, and despite this 40 Kenyans had been busted in the previous 4 years.

Who is that?

To the extent I have a "EPO doesn't work" premise, it is because there are so few Americans and Europeans and Russians (and Soviets) and other non-Africans who ran fast in the EPO-era, compared to the 1980s.

It doesn't seem credible to think that for three decades the poorer East African nations were doping 84%, compared to North Africans 8% and non-Africans 8%, a group which includes Russia. Richer countries would surely have had access to better doping and the means to hide it (see Russia, or cycling).

What evidence can you provide that any East Africans were doping significantly before 2012? Your link suggests doping started at least by 2012.

We have also seen Sunday Times reporting that East Africans weren't even ranked in the top-10 countries for blood doping suspicion during the years 2001-2012. This casts some serious doubt that East African success was due to blood doping. And don't forget that East Africans were dominating World Cross Country in the 1980s.
