Just brutal for the northeast. Turns out kids prefer a fun community atmosphere, not activism and drama. No doubt the prettier girls make a difference too(southern belles that look like women vs blue haired activists at columbia)
These schools offer in-state tuition to out of state kids because they are trying to stop the bleeding of the brain drain they experience year after when the most capable graduates get the hell out of there as soon as they can. Once these kids spend 4 years in whatever craphole state it is and experience the terrible job environments they'll get the hell out too,.
The weather, guys. Today's young generation wants to do what they see SM influencers doing, and it's hard to do much of it in snow and ice.
Key part of article was these kids being locked down and hating life during covid and then seeing smiling pretty enjoying themselves on TV at Clemson and auburn at football games. Wait...but it's a pandemic...we can't go outside.....how is this possible
This happened with my son and his friend group here in the North East.
All of them picked southern colleges despite almost all of the parents being alums from North East schools.
Big selling point were the actual tours we went on.
Northeast college tour guides were either 1) Obese 2) Purple haired and talked about their sexual preference more than the actual school 3) Talked about politics and protests.
Southern college tour guides were 1) bubbly blonde girls and a 2) frat bro student athlete who was fun to be around. 3) Talked about the fun stuff that happens on campus.
No surprise that southern schools are more popular. Job market post graduation is so much better for southern schools as well.

A growing number of high-school seniors in the North are making an unexpected choice for college: They are heading to Clemson, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Alabama and other universities in the South.
Students say they are searching for the fun and school spirit emanating from the South on their social-media feeds. Their parents cite lower tuition and less debt, and warmer weather. College counselors also say many teens are eager to trade the political polarization ripping apart campuses in New England and New York for the sense of community epitomized by the South’s football Saturdays. Promising job prospects after graduation can sweeten the pot.
The number of Northerners going to Southern public schools went up 84% over the past two decades, and jumped 30% from 2018 to 2022, a Wall Street Journal analysis of the latest available Education Department data found.
I think so many look at Southern universities (and let's limit this to the large land grant schools and leave aside Vandy and Duke and such which are a different breed and having been getting Yankees for a long long time) and think they are bad schools. Well if getting national merit scholars is a sign of a good university then southern schools do quite well.
(As a UGA alum some of this hurts...) Florida and Alabama topped the list in 2021 with 382 and 281 respectively. (Univ of Chicago was 3rd at 269). Texas A&M 4th.
There were some surprises to me like UCF being at 18 (107).
Only 3 in the top 10 would be considered "Northeast": Harvard, MIT, and Northeastern (a shocker to me).
Also, I think a key element is cost. As someone who went to a large state university (see above) and who worked in higher ed and visited a lot of campuses through those jobs, the atmosphere at a large southern university in the fall cannot be beat especially on a game day. The weather at football games in the south is rarely all that cold. In fact it is not all that cold all that often.
Plus outside of going to the most selective schools in the NE I doubt the educational difference is all that great. That Ga Tech or Clemson or Auburn engineering degree is as good as any state school in the NE (MIT is private, right?).
So yeah going to college in the south can be a great deal all the way around. Add in that the level of pretentiousness is going to be lower than what I see at a lot of NE unis and it seems like a no brainer.
The 2020-2021 National Merit Annual Report is out. As I’ve done in years past, here’s the colleges who enrolled the most Class of 2021 National Merit Scholars — number of 2020 scholars following: Rk. School 2021 2020 1 Univer...
Maybe people in duh South East call it the North East, but here in the Northeast we spell it as one word. You obviously have a google machine, so start typing and report back.
Makes sense for people who want to study easy subjects and party. Leaves more spots at the elite institutions for those with productive goals like professional degrees (MD/JD) or STEM research.
