The brain needs oxygen to process the input but there will be enough residual oxygen left in the brain to process a whiff if the astronaut took their oxygen masks off for just a few seconds (equivalent to holding your breath) provided there is some air, oxygenated or otherwise. In any case, the space shuttle is a pressurized chamber with oxygen, so there’s no problem just taking a whiff normally like on earth.

As I said originally, they brought some moon dirt and rocks into the lander vehicle, where there is oxygen.
At that point, helmets off, they could smell the stuff, if it had a smell. I bet one of them ate or at least tasted it too.

Both Russia and China have moon rocks, and surely have smelled them. I can't believe NASA overlooked this. Any chemistry teacher will tell you smell is a key part of observation
They got moon dust all over themselves. It caused respiratory issues because the particles have extremely jagged edges (no wind, water, etc to smooth them out). There are pictures of them covered in the stuff. Never read anything about what it smelled like.
