Are Runners Cheap?

Yes we are cheap during our competitive years. When you start to slow down, say by age 37, you start to drink more booze and spend more money.

The 45 year old (formerly competitive)runner is much the opposite of his younger self. Spends and drinks like a sailor.

well, i haven't done a laundry load in about 4 weeks and have been rewearing the same running shorts for numerous runs...does that make me a stingy cheap person? :)

yes...cheap and smelly...not a good way to go through life son.

If I want something running related I buy it. I'll shop for the cheapest price but if I need 50 pairs of shoes a year it's 50 pairs I'll get. Same thing with apparel, food, epo.

apparently the tightwads on this board are part of the vulture mentality that bring a bag to fill of post race food offerings. it is truly disgusting to watch some of these people behave in this way. you'd think they hadn't eaten in a month or something. they shamelessly take far more than they should...but the best is when a volunteer says something to these cheap jerks and then they get indignant....as if you are doing something wrong asking them not to take more than their fair share.

Regarding the spending habits of triathletes..... Why is it that the quality of the triathlete is directly related to the amount they are willing to spend on the sport? e.g. the worst ones spend the most on the "latest" gear. I especially like the fat slob who will spend $200 on new carbon spokes in order to shave 2 ounces off the weight of his bike when what he really needs to do is work on losing his disgusting 10 pound gut.

What about the dope who shows up at a race wearing his old nylon running shorts circa 1974? Buy a new frickin pair of running shorts for god's sake!!

I was going to post this a few months back, but I didn't really want to start a shitstorm. However, you just jogged my memory, and I don't really care now, so here goes.

I was recently in a city where a major triathlon was about to be held, so the place was teeming with triathletes. You could pick out every damn triathlete in everyday encounters, because they just HAD to be wearing something that signified their status (like spandex, running shorts, a race t-shirt, a bike jersey, etc.) even when they weren't exercising. Also, in the morning, the tri-geeks would be out on their $5000 bikes, wearing speedos and $300 sunglasses. As a whole, they definitely upheld the tri-geek stereotype.

There was a thread about blue collar vs. white collar runners some time back. As a whole, runners are much more blue collar and populist than the prissy tri-geek crowd. Triathletes will probably read this and get pissed, but the evidence is clear...

If you had the money, you would spend it on cool stuff too. Just because you are poor (and/or cheap) doesn't mean you can ridicule those of us who can actually afford expensive things without a second mortgage.

I'll hang around until the end of the event and try to get as much free food as I can. If I can get a couple bunches of bananas, a dozen bagels, and a case of bottled water, that's about twenty bucks I can now spend on porn. That's something I never cheap out on.

Yeah, I have three people that I work with that are NOT in very good shape. They ridicule me for buying a $1000 road bike. Two of them bought custom Dean's and the third one bought some custom Italian bike I had never heard of for $4000. They look down on me because of my $1000 bike, but I could smoke all their asses on the roads. I remember one of them asking how much I spent on my bike and I said, $1000. "Oh, well I have a custom, titanium Dean at home." Good for you. Why don't you shove it up your ass? Then the other guy that bought the Italian bike asked me about my bike because he was shopping. I said I got a great deal and got it for $1000. He said, "Oh, that's all it cost? I'm looking for a higher end bike. Like something that costs around $4000." I just rolled my eyes and said, "Have fun." I hate that crap.

If we are cheap then why do we pay race fees from $10 up to $100+ for a freaking marathon???

At least we aren't paying $400+ for an entry fee like those doing Ironman are.

I don't know if runners are cheap but they are poor. Little weasels have a hard time climbing the corporate ladder.
