Jacob- Loves the 3000M distance and pace, He is unsure about his fitness after Olympics and Lausanne DL. And how he has recovered. He believes the Strong field will drive the result and time. Obviously there to win the WR. Will be a bonus.
I do love him being unsure of his fitness after a conservatively-run sub-3:28 where he passed on a lot of drafting to save for the last 200. I can assure you Jakob it’s fine.
Jakob always gives a lot of credit to the current world record so this isn’t really a surprise. I think he knows he’s ready to go, I just hope the pacers can make it to at least 2k.
Also there are some genuinely funny moments with the last group. Warholm’s “Vikings don’t give a fck” remark, Mondo struggling with his mic while the other guys tried to help him, and of course Crouser telling Tamberi “I’m more likely to jump 2.45 than you are to throw 23 meters.”
As far as I can see the temperature will be better than expected a couple a days ago (26/27 C) and the wind is weak right before and after the event -might be good conditions..?
Just caught the full interview from after this week’s win. In response to the others being tired from the Olympics: “If you need 14 days to recover from a 1500 then you are training wrong.”
Not a bad point considering he entered that race with an additional 6 miles of hard racing in his legs compared to his competitors.
Also, let’s not forget that Jakob was ‘only’ in 3:27.95 shape last year when he shattered the 2 mile world record, in which I think after watching that specific run we all (most of us) agreed he could also take down the 3k WR. Regardless if he’s ‘not in 3:26 shape’ (which we do or do not know) we know he is in better 1500m shape NOW this very second than he was when he ran the 2m.
also, odd Jakob insight (maybe?) but considering his very very open dominance and arrogance in interviews over the rest of the field, he does have an odd respect for the records, in which he doesn’t ever talk like he’s going to destroy them, he just usually says something like “meh hopefully I’m in great shape and we’ll see a great race today”. Unlike Mr. Lyles who talks a bit too much about records and never remotely comes close to them. Maybe that’s the key?
I can see why someone would think that, but I watched the interview and the interviewer asked him a dumb question about whether he was recovered from the Olympics. I don't think in this instance it was much of a dig (he's made plenty of them in the past) but rather his attempt at explaining why recovery shouldn't be a big factor after such length of time.

Yeah I agree I don't think his fitness is an issue (ie. top end ability to run times), the only thing is that at this point in the season the chances he will just have a slightly off day due to cumulative fatigue are obviously much higher than the first half of the season. So for me there is just as much chance he goes out and runs the WR as there is he is a little flat and runs 7.22/3 or something like that. Prior to Paris I would I have said there was a far greater chance that he could utilize his max ceiling and break it.
His volume of racing at this level is astounding. This will be his 15th race of the outdoor season including two championships and I also include prelims because they still require/have a physical and emotional effort/impact. He is great for the sport nobody could ever argue that.
That being said he always seems very much at home with the safety net of the lights in his peripheral vision and we know he likes this track. I am honestly less certain he can break this record than I was a week ago but I still think he is going to.

A cheeky dig.
For JW,JK and CH for being one race wonders and who are unable to replicate their medal winning performance on the DL circuit.
CH won, by far, the most important race of the season. It’s exciting to watch Ingebrigtsen go after WRs, but the loss in Paris, ended his chance of accomplishing the ultimate, which would have been to pull off the 1500m hat trick in L.A.

Having listened to the interview. Jacob has put in all the caveats as to why the WR will not happen.
The lights help if you are already at the level but are not balancing the effort over the distance. (Like FK was 0.3S away from 1500 WR in 2023)
Suffice to say no one in this race is at the 7.20.67 level. Or ever will be.

No I think two things are at play
1) Jakobs hubris has been tempered (at least for the moment) by what happened in Paris which is a good thing. He's probably learning that it's more fun when you undersell yourself a little vs oversell - especially when it comes to chasing WRs
2) He realizes himself that this is the back end of the season and while he's not on fumes yet, it's also not the same as the beginning of July.
I think he said exactly the right things. You're quite adamant about him not breaking this record? You sure? Probably a tough one to come back from credibility wise if he goes out and breaks the record tomorrow you know.
Not really. When Komen broke the record in 96 it was mid 70's in the afternoon sun with no grandstands offering any shade.
80 (27C) is obviously hotter but it's 7.5 minutes of running - it's not going to be a massive determining factor. The humidity is a hair under 50% which is also fine. If he is fit enough and hits a good day the weather won't be a factor.
