It's considered typical to pay 2-3 months' salary for an engagement ring. So if you make around 50k a year, $10,000 is an expected price. Is it dumb that we spend so much on such a thing, culturally? Yes. But your girlfriend has expectations that many women have.
Listen, I’m not against buying something nice, but a $10k f***ing ring?
What do I get in return? A few years of lay and then a dead bedroom?
Depending on your ages and life experiences it could just be a misunderstanding of how finances really work. Did she just say she wants it as in a "I want a Ferrari" kind of whim or did she demand it if you want to marry her. There's no rule saying the woman gets to choose the ring. Get something cheaper that's still nice and sets the tone for a realistic financial life together. Honestly the rest of your post is more concerning. Sounds like you don't want to get married so... no worries.

The advise has been wrong so far - the advice needs to be for the woman to flee ASAP.
This woman is dating a guy who wants to know "what he gets in return" when proposes? You get a wife - a woman you should be pumped to spend the rest of your life with. I urge her to flee first.
I thought it supposed to be 2-3 months of salary. You’re getting off CHEEEEAAAAPPPP. That’s probably just a week (net) for the average poster on this site.
If you're about to be engaged to a bimbo that bases her commitment and appreciation of you on how much you're willing to spend on a stupid ass ring, you made a bad decision. The ultimate goal when it comes to marriage is to find someone who makes your life easier. A financially driven broad who is going to suck you of funds is not going to make your life easier. Not saying you cannot buy her expensive things, but if she does not understand that it is not about the price of a metal but the undying commitment to love and fidelity, she ain't the one, bro.

You are as usual correct Rojo. But your reasoning is off slightly. The reason she should run is because he posts here and is looking for others to tell him what to do.

That’s what the people selling the rings want you to do. In reality, it should be something worked out by the couple long before considering proposal. If you aren’t on the same page and/or can’t compromise, marriage will not be fun.
I got my wife a $10k engagement ring. Then bought a Cervelo p5 tt bike as my wedding present to myself. Equal value. The ring was definitely worth it. She got lots of compliments on the ring and it made her happy.

Here is how this movie plays out.Does she want a $50k wedding and Honeymoon in Tahiti?
Next will be a $ XX Million dollar house and a kid. 7 years later DIVORCE. You are now 30 years old paying alimony. Fat and bald because you have not run a step working your zzz off to support her and the monster.
That being said, I've been married 35 years to the most amazing person. We hashed out all the major life goal issues and responsibilities ect..BEFORE getting married.
The ring was made by Art Professor who taught Jewelry. Wedding reception was small. Maybe 40 people at most. Went camping in UP Michigan.
I assume you are probably in debt now from college tuition?
My wife is a nurse and didn’t want a large ring that would get caught on gloves. So she picked out a $199 anniversary band that had tiny inlaid diamonds for her engagement ring. Still married after 25 years.
