Is Jakob better than Mo Farah was at 5K?

I think Jakob is the greatest championship 5k runner ever. Farah was great no doubt, but Jakobs margin of victory when healthy is comical.

What did the competition look like for Mo Farah compared to Jakob? I still think Jakob wins the 5,000m but without Cheptegei, Kiplimo or Kejelcha, the field was definitely weaker.

With super shoes and bicarb, I think Farah vs. Jakob would be a pretty good battle. I wonder if it would play out similarly to the 1500m, where Jakob would feel more pressure to lead knowing he has a 3:28 man with a very good kick in the field. With super shoes and bicarb, Mo’s 3:28 could be a little faster, too. That’s a much different scenario than the 5,000m at this Olympics where Jakob was significantly better than everybody else over 1500m.

here it was Cheptegei getting demolished by Jakob. (in a 12:48 race!) And that was 3 years ago, when he wasn't nearly as strong as now.

Yes, and he likely can continue winning 5ks like this through 2028, and maybe beyond. His 1500m speed + his training being geared towards longer distances have given him an insane aerobic engine. This combination is so lethal that he could be off and still win. Gebrhiwet got at least a 10m lead on Jakob when he was still boxed in but there was no doubt in my mind that he was going to be able to chase Gebrhiwet down. It was almost comical how easy he made that last 500. The 5k is HIS event and he doesn’t even try. That’s how good he is.

Mo was a world class 1500m runner and not that much slower than Jakob (especially when factoring in bicarb and super shoes). He was also great at shifting gears.

Im a huge Jakob fan and a Mo hater, but I think Jakob would need to make it a sub 12:50 race while ratcheting the pace down the last 1k to be clear of Mo, otherwise it’s a coin flip.

I do agree Mo is underrated here. He's certainly one of the best championship runners in the 5k/10k. If they're facing each other, I would say it would be 7:3(or maybe 8:2), Jakob to Mo. Mo would take Katir's role there.

Btw, I just re-watched the Paris 5k. Jakob closed the last 1k in 2:20 and 800m in 1:49

Mo closed similarly but in a much slower race (13:50, 2:19, 1:48)

Cheptegei is obviously better at championships than in the regular season, but I think Jakob would’ve had a 50-50 chance at worst of winning in Tokyo if the schedule allowed.

Also absolutely insane that they didn’t make that double a little more doable scheduling wise. Two distance golds in potentially 2 olympic record times at 20 would’ve been an inner circle all time great performance

farah has always been overrated in my book , he came along in a time when Bekele and Ethiopia had begun their decline and the Kenyans were as well and at a time the US was still kinda just meh still trying to find their place they’ve found in todays era.

and the fact Mo was Just a beyond average runner, then goes to Salazar and becomes elite just never made sense… well it makes sense.. but you know…

He also was boxed in from 600m to 500m, slowed a bit after catching Gebrhiwet on the backstretch, and eased up the last 50m or so when he could tell he gapped the field. This easily could have been faster.

Yeah, and Jakob didn't even give it all because the race was over before the last 200m and he didn't even look over his shoulder (kinda a giveaway from him when he's trying hard) while Mo overtook the silver medalist (sorry, didn't know who he was) only in the last 80 or so meters.

True, it would have made a great race in 2021. Though Jakob should take him easily now. I'm positive that's the reason why Chep skipped the 5k.

I think theyre about the same. Thing is,we are yet to see jakob run a truly fast 5000. He wins major titles,but theyre usually "slow" sit and kick races, run in 13 minutes or more.For some reason in championships of late ,the east africans have flopped,and ran way below their best times. Its becoming very strange seeing sub 12.40 guys struggle to run 13.15.Also nobody is sure how well jakob's fancy shoe best of 3.26.73 stacks up against mo's pre shoe best of 3.28.81. If the difference is 0.5% ,mo is slightly faster.

We are talking about the 5000 not 1500, right? His 5000 is slower than Jakobs. But I think the double olympic gold of Farah should be respected.

Does Jakob get to have testosterone massages and 'Vitamin C' injections from Salazar? Training camps in remote Ethiopia with Jama Aden that never happened although posted on Instagram? Faulty doorbells?
