Joanie had no super shoes. It was probably roughly the same temperature as Paris this year but the course was not as challenging in LA. The point is that prime Joanie would have been in the mix this year.

Also AlSal, Billy and the old gang from mid '80s as as could have done just as good as Conner and Clayton

ve spent 10 seconds looking it up?
Yeah of course I did. But I knew nitpickers might pick nits. So I said “probably” to help foil the pickers of nits, but here you are.

Our latest Throw Back Thursday piece is up about the 1984 Olympic women's marathon.https://www.letsrun.com/news/2020/06/i-was-bored-so-i-watched-joan-benoit-samuelson-win-the-1984-olympic-marathon/What's interesting to us...
I think her time and manner of winning tends to get lost in the popular mind nowadays, and all people remember is the fact that she won and that it was the first OG marathon for women. But it really was a stunning effort in and of itself, even beyond just being a gold medal winning one.
Joan soloed the run for the last how many miles? That's much tougher than having people to run with and help pull you along. Throw in super shoes and better hydration and she is a force to be reckoned with even today.
I have teenage daughters who run. Always point them to Joan because she’s the model for a powerful brave woman. She just made it work, ran with pansche, ‘full send’. Also Joan wasn’t tiny - she was an athletic build and strong vs. waif-like. She’s the prototype.

I think her body was almost a disadvantage. Not really athletic looking, but she made up for it with an extremely strong will and work ethic.
Sometimes I wonder why she stays quiet during coaching abuse scandals or the dirty side of Nike running. But I guess she probably is still on the nike dole.
The first 5k was slow (18:15) and Joanie went to the front. She skipped the first water table (maybe even surged) and was 51 seconds up at 15k. At 20k she was 72 seconds ahead. At both 25k and 30k she was 110 seconds up which was reduced to 91 seconds at 35k. Waitz closed to 87 seconds at 40k. Joanie won by 94 seconds.
