Longest javelin throw of her life. Stopped well short of the line. Watching it fly, gets excited and bunny hops forward and lands on the line with both feet.
Red flag.
Did that cost her a medal? Goes into the 800 in 5th.
It’s worth pointing out that she didn’t do well in the long jump either and gave up 150+ points in that event to the leaders. Even if she had that javelin throw back it might not have been enough to put her in the medals, even if she rocks the 800.
Just for clarity, I had no intent to re-write history or present this inaccurately. That 's how it was covered and everything I wrote is factual.
That is why I asked about it costing her a medal. The multi-events are not an area in which I know a lot. I only watch them in the Olympics and Worlds.
Do you know what the drop-off was from her scratched throw and the shorter one that counted and how much that hurt her?
Hurdles and long jump were well off her best, and I think the knee was bothering her. A healthy Anna Hall medals and probably gets silver behind Thiam.
Very disappointing meet from her. Lot of hype at the trials and only came 5th here. It seems like having the 800 be your best event doesn't make it any easier because then in the last event she just pulls everyone else along.
The US "system" seems poorly suited for the multi-events, neither our decathletes or heptathletes did well this Olympics. Countries that have more national level support in terms of coaching, facilities etc seem much better positioned to compete at this level.
She was expected to medal behind Thiam and KJT but no surprise she wasn’t in her best shape this meet. Really hope her coaches ban her from entering 400MH races in the future

The silver medalist in the decathlon spent the year in our "system" and was one of the few Germans to medal.
Ultimately it did not cost her a medal. She competed as well as she could have given her recent injury. Her explosiveness will take a while to regain. Hopefully pushing to get back in time for the Olympics won’t set her back. At 23, she still has amazing potential (highest heptathlon score in the past seven years).

Re-writing history a bit here, she threw a pb the very next throw which was about the same distance. She's just had a poor meet.

The high school system is especially pretty bad at developing decathletes/heptathletes. In the vast majority of states, there simply is no such thing, and it is extremely difficult to implement multi-event competition at regular high school meets.
In running events, for example, most of our best show up in the high school system across all disciplines. For potential decathletes, it is vanishingly difficult to discover decathlon talent versus simply being a pretty good sprinter, and I don’t think a lot of our elite talent gets developed properly as in other events. Once someone reaches the NCAA level (as they likely will have to in at least one event to have elite decathlon potential) they are largely set in specializing for an event already, and might be even less likely to try out multi-event competition. That is all to say that our model doesn’t grow decathletes/heptathletes well.
