Judging on his interview he seems aware of it. He knows he went too hard. But not sure why he didn't realize it right away when he went on the front. He has enough experience to know he's going really fast without even needing to see the time splits.
Jakob and his coaches have overthought every race since Kerr beat him. every step of every race seems ridiculously preplanned. down to the last detail. it's all think, think, tactics, tactics. It must get in his head and he forgets it's a race. would love to see him throw all that away and just run with a basic game plan.. stay attached, cover moves, and kick. i bet he'd run much better.
He should have let Kerr lead for a bit and then suffocate everyone.
He doesn't need to sit and kick. Just saving a bit of energy for 1.5 laps is enough to then really lead a hot pace till the end.
I keep saying this but maybe now you'll all listen. Jakob's super power is his one giant aerobic gear. The 1500 is the shortest distance he can dominate, but he needs every meter to spread his effort out. He needed to have led from the start on WR pace but run EVENLY and not with that insane 100-400. He needed to squeeze them all and hold strong in the end. He zapped himself and the others didn't fully take the bait so they mowed him down. He cannot win this another way.

Maybe he can start by running less paced races... just a thought

Kerr would never lead, it was similar to the semis when he stayed on Jakob's shoulder. Jakob's mistake was not letting the Kenyans lead, they were more than willing to do the work and keep it an honest pace. he could have conserved more energy for the kick letting them take the first few laps.

No he does not have enough experience RACING. He was experience following pacers. Very different.
Ingebrigtsen is a second faster than all of them and he ran the race he needed to. He just didn't have enough the end TODAY. I'd still take Ingebrigtsen for gold 5 times out of 10, Kerr 2 out of 10, and then 1 out of 10 for Hocker, Nuguse and another guy.
By the way, where is the speculation about Hocker's 3 second PR? That's sketchy, and I'm never the guy yelling Gills To The Dope after every race.

Jakob knew they were going to make it a sub 3:28 race and he knew he needed that to try to secure a medal. After tonight I don't see any scenario where Jakob was going to medal other ran running an evenly paced sub 3:27 from the gun. Those guys are also faster kickers than he is and they are tactically much smarter.

he didn't count on Hocker running a 3 second PR. I don't think anyone did (except Hocker)

Total bull. Those guys are fit within 1 sec of him and today proved it as they ran 3:27 in a final after rounds. Jakob go eat that humble pie and learn to respect your competition.

But the way he turned his head with 250 to go, he didn't count on any of them being close. That's his massive problem, hubris... learn to respect the competition.
He ran like someone who had never been there before.
My armchair opinion: all the trash-talking got him so psyched up he couldn’t keep calm that first 100, then he got antsy, and blew his load the next 400
