There was a woman passenger riding along (not rowing) in the Dutch boat in the men’s eights competition and she received a medal in the ceremony. I assume she was like a cheerleader or something, other teams also had a male passenger. My two questions are, why is there a passenger/cheerleader in the boat, and why can a woman do this role in a men’s competition? Riding along in a boat seems like the easiest way to win an Olympic medal, I’m not sure why more people don’t try this.
