Parent/child Successful Runners

The first one that comes to mind is Steve Flanagan and Cheryl Bridges (also Flanagan, also Tregworthy) and their daughter Shalane Flanagan. Erik Heinonen, who's been injured at Oregon for a good while but was an excellent high school runner is the son of Tom Heinonen, a 2:18 marathon runner in the late 60s.

There must be several more and I'll list them if I think of them.

Archie San Romani Sr., and Archie San Romani Jr. Dad was one of the world's best in the 30's, and the son broke 4 while at Oregon (and also held the Nat. HS record for awhile - he went to the same HS and had the same coach as Jim Ryun).

Damn, this is tough.

I mentioned this in a different thread a while back, but there's a Canadian kid in Nova Scotia, Jeff (?) Englehutt who's pretty quick, but not yet a world beater (3:58 1500 I believe), with a good pedigree. His dad Rob ran a 2:16:50 marathon in the early 80s.

Rudy Chapa (28:32 High School 10k) and his son Joaquin Chapa are pretty fast. I think Joaquin is around 4:10 for the mile.

Matt Centrowitz (AR holder for 5k at one time - 13:12; olympic team member) hads a daughter in HS that is a junior running sub 5 for the mile.

Paul and Seth Pilkington

and Rudy's daughter, Annaliese, too. She's a budding 1500m runner who is a sophomore, I think.

Scooby-Doo was a great runner..he and shaggy..now there is Scrappy-Doo ..he runs fast as well

Eri Macdonald and Pippa Macdonald/ Duncan Macdonald

Think Duncan was first to break Pre's American record at 5k...pr about 13:20.

Daughters are better at the shorter stuff. Eri a senior at Oregon with about 2:05 half pr's.

Pippa a senior in hs with about 2:15. Pippa bound to UC Berkeley.

But as I'm sure you know, Coe senior was a cyclist, not a runner.

Graham Hill ran a 2:20 marathon, but quite as quick as the 2:09 by his dad Ron in 1970.

Glenn Stewart ran for Scotland in the 10k in last year's Commonwealth Games, but didn't win it like his dad Lackie back in 1970.

Hugh Brasher ran under 9mins for the Steeplechase in the 90s, but not quite as fast as his dad Chris when winning Olympic Gold in 56.

Clive Tulloh clocked a 31min 10k but never reached the level that his dad Bruce did when becoming European 5k champ in the 50s.

Alex Carter is one of the UK's top 800m runners - her dad Chris was UK record holder in the early 70s.

Tom Bedford, son of Dave former 10k WR holder, is currently doing well in the junior ranks. As is Ryan Mcleod, son of Mike for 10k Olympic silver medalist. Ailsh McColgan, daughter of Liz, is also starting to win races in Sctoland.

colin mcardle , a great over 50 runner has a son named tom who has run well here in the U.S. i believe tom's uncle is bruce fordyce. can you confirm this?

dan aldridge (3:38.70) has a daughter jenny at arizona state.

Jim Ryun's twin sons both ran some decent 800/miles. Although not quite as fast as their dad, I believe each son ran close to 1:52 in high school.

As one of the boys frequents this site, we may get clarification on this.

Not the level of some of these examples, but...

Spike Paranya was ICAAAA champ at the mile back in the old days, and son Karl Paranya was 2nd or 3rd at the USATF meet in the 1500m in the late 1990s.

is destined to be quick.
