Why is Navy still in the Patriot League?

The men and often the women win every year in xc, indoor/outdoor track. So why are they still in this league?

Is it just so the Athletic Director and coaches can point at all of the "titles" they have as a way to justify keeping their jobs? That's the only justification I can see, because it's certainly not helping the Navy athletes.

These midshipmen are ready to compete on a NATIONAL stage but are HELD BACK by competing against athletes who are much worse than them.

THEN, when they do compete against super good athletes, they fail bc they're so used to beating up on slower athletes. All that so the Navy AD can justify his own self-importance. It's sad.

Because the Ivy League won't let them back into the Heps Championship meets

They were too wishy washy in terms of if they could compete at the conference championship or not, as Navy would flip between Heps or Patriot League (depending on which one was easier for the win). In spring 2003, the Navy squads split come conference championship time - men went to Patriot League while women when to Heps. Ivy League got tired of it, so they kicked Navy out after the season and decided to have the Heps meets focus solely on the Ivy League schools.

This is the worst take. I hope you aren’t a current Mid. Navy should be able to train through Patriot Leagues and focus on Regionals. It’s not like Navy is making NCAAs in XC…make NCAAs and you are on the big stage. problem solved. No one runs poorly because their last race was too easy.

It’s one meet a season. XC/track isn’t like football, basketball etc where most of their schedule is determined by their conference affiliation. Navy is free to build as competitive an XC/track schedule as they desire outside of the PL champ meet.

There are other sports where Navy gets CRUSHED in the Patriot League. Their basketball team was 7th place out of 10.

No school is going to leave an entire conference just for track.

Navy barely won the Presidents Cup in the Patriot League, solely carried by track. This means their other sports are mediocre at best.

Does Navy football still compete in the AAC? I know the AAC kind of got gutted during the whole conference realignment BS but I think they're still pretty competitive at the top end, right?

What league do you think they should be in? The Communist League?

because the service affiliation and commitment inherently limits the army/navy recruiting pool and ceiling on what they can hope to achieve. at which point i think conference championships in a prestigious academic conference are probably more valuable for recruiting next classes than finishing 10th in some other conference hoping to chase national glory with a team inherently hamstrung for recruiting purposes.

also kind of sounds like the folks who want a IAA power like sam houston to move up to bowl division for supposed prestige where they can then watch their former national championship contender go 3-9 in IA and not actually activate their theoretical potential to make a bowl. and if they ever make a bowl it's probably the loan sharks inc. shreveport bowl or something.
