I thought we'd see the Prefontaine version of Athing tonight--there is definitely something wrong. Looks like she could benefit from the Diljeet Taylor "run for her" mental coaching to get her spirit renewed.
The OP needs to understand Athing’s happiness does not revolve around the OP.
Athing clearly is not happy with track and field, but it’s a great income for her, and is difficult for ANYONE to walk away from that income when they have many more years of it ahead with how young Athing is.
OP, Kersee may not race her enough, but that’s not the critical issue here. There’s a world outside of track, trust me.

She seemed to be happy enough before moving to LA.
I know I will get downvotes but that comes with the territory on letsrun. I was actually a pretty good golfer in HS and probably could have golfed at a D2 school in college. But deep down I hated golf. And I never did it. I ran track and XC in D2 but I wasn't as good at running as I was golf. I just didn't like it and no coach could have fixed that I haven't golfed in 20+ years.
Where exactly are ppl getting this "Mu hates track" narrative? Has she said something odd in an interview or on social media?
To me, it just looks like she's pouting bc she should be preparing to defend her Olympic title, not at some other meet in Gainesville. To me, it just doesn't look like she's just over Trials fall/fiasco.
I think most of you guys are overthinking this. I know Kersee's coaching is controversial and not everyone's cup of tea, but she ran 1:54 less than a year ago under him.

To the know-it-all idiots who knows nothing about Mu and her coach: ANY coach dealing with an athlete who just doesn't have the fire in his or her belly has trouble at hand. That's ANY coach. And the poor woman fell badly in the Olympic Trials and had her dreams shattered, adding to Bobby Kersee's, or any coach's, difficulties.
She needs to take some time off and find the winners mentality again.
It’s pretty clear to me that her mental health is struggling. Lots of people on these boards are saying she’s just phoning it in and doing the bare minimum but I think she’s actually just headcasing very badly.
Ive had a couple years in my track career where my mental health was garbage, and guess what I did? Pull out of races left and right, run with horrible tactics whenever I would race and perform well below my fitness. Does that ring a bell or sound familiar?
Someone who doesn’t care about the sport wouldn’t walk off the track hyperventilating and crying after a bad performance.
The thing about the 800m is that you gotta be some kind of not right in the head to do it well. The training, the racing, all of it. It’s a double edged sword.
I agree with all of your post but I think she could walk off the track crying and hyperventilating if she hated track - if she had put a lot of time and effort in (especially when she wasn't happy) and felt under a lot of pressure then it all fell apart. She also could've found it embarrassing but I think she would've felt that all of the previous months hard work was for nothing and that it had gone wrong.
Given she hasn't qualified for the Olympics it might be best to take some time off. But look at Jessica Hull and how going back to her roots must've at least played a part in her improvement. She spoke, I think, about how settled and happy she felt. Maybe Athing would benefit from moving back to a set-up she had in the past or something similar to it. Something needs to change.

Please don't use Hull as a model example. Just please don't...
