I'm looking for feedback on Tempo or Threshold runs as despite doing a lot of research, there are aspects that I do not understand. I understand that they are designed to train the body to handle lactic-acid build up and they are run at a pace that is sustainable for around around an hour (often described as "comfortably hard" or an 80-90% effort). However, most training plans have tempo/threshold runs of much shorter duration than 1 hour. Yet I have seen it stated that the Tempo run is designed to tire you out by "duration rather than speed". That does not seem to make sense. If you could run at x pace for an hour, but you only do it for 20-40minutes how are you tiring yourself out? It seems intuitively Tempo runs should be much longer- starting at just short of 1 hour and progressing to over an hour to train your body to handle lactic acid for that speed and duration. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Matthew
