Disclaimer: I'm a barely casual soccer fan. Just started getting more into it as my kids have started to play and they're pretty good players.
This is not a hot take by any means. I just get a laugh out of the gnashing of teeth every couple years when the US sports world is up in arms over the USMNT not advancing to the next stage.
Like nearly every other country on earth, soccer is not where our best athletes strive for excellence in athletics. NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL will always be a bigger draw to our best athletes because the money is so significantly better than MLS.
Yes, our very best (Pulisic, etc) have contracts with European teams and they get paid and do well over there.
But we are not sending our best athletes. It has been discussed on here ad nauseum, but our best athletes are chasing the money and often earning it, too. NFL WRs and DBs, NBA guards and wings, MLB middle infielders and outfielders are all superior athletes to a large majority of the players that make up the USMNT and the pool of players underneath that team that make up the alternates.
USATF, for the most part, has the best possible athletes in most spots, save jumps and throws. I will always be convinced an athlete like Russell Westbrook with a little bit of focus and practice could be a world class LJ/TJ guy. And that goes for several other athletes on that level. HJ is another story, as that takes a lot more time due to it's technical work.
No way could they battle for fastest man--absolutely not. But since we've gone away from the model of using our best sprinters to be our best jumpers, I think athletes of that sort would be unmatched.
But the USMNT will forever be mired in mediocrity. We should celebrate anytime they make it to the knockout stage of any tournament.
