I ran 15:02 last year in a road race. I was so close it hurt. I may never be in that kind of shape again.

You should pick track. A lot more people who are capable of running fast times are running track 5k's not on the road. Track times are guaranteed accurate while lots of road courses are mismeasured. I've run sub-15 on the track in the last year but haven't tried a single road race, why would I want to race a bunch of 17 minute guys?

Of course, if you learned to run them hard it wouldn't be jogging and a well-run 5K would hurt way worse than some ultra-sloggers race.

well thanks for the replies so far guys. But so far, we don't have ONE confirmed sub 15:00 in the last year. Just as I thought...... a lot of big talkers on this board, but few who actually deliver. But I bet some of the quality guys will come crawling out of the woodword soon.

And good job on the 15:02 "mid distance". Don't give up hope yet.

I think the problem is that most of the posters who think you suck if you can't break 15:00 haven't done it themselves. They are young'ns who speak from the perspective of a "sports fan." Somewhere in the back of their mind, they believe that when they are MY age, THET will have conquered the world.

......most of them will soon find out how hard it is.

Ran 14:58 in my final race last Fall after doing several 5k's in a row, shaking off a few seconds each week. Ran much faster in my only 5000m indoor track race this winter.

And the 5k is a legimate distance, if you are such a hot shot go win it! By the way, most road 5ks I know are run in the low 15 min for the winner.

That is so far from the truth. Just a guess but I bet the overall average winning time for a road 5k is just in the middle to low 16's. There are a crap load of 17, 18, and even 19 minute winning times out there that balance out the 14 and 15 minute winners.

I guess it depends on where you live, but here in Omaha and throughout most of Nebraska you're going to be murdering people in road races with a low 15, save maybe a race or two in Lincoln that offers some money(I don't know about 5ks though). Nothing against these people, but Omaha, and this part of the midwest isn't really a hot-bed for runners. It's been my experience that road race distances are more notoriously innacurate than XC, and this is maybe just my own weakness, but I have a hard time really getting pumped and serious for road races. When so much of a race is mental, I just usually can't really get into it mentally unless I know I'm racing some real serious competition. Not to be an elitest asshole, because I know I'm not that good, but the people you're often racing in road races are running and competing for different reasons, and they often have other priorities in life than throwing down 80 to 90 mile weeks (or more)and all the adequate workouts that it requires. If I hop in a road race, it's usually just for fun and I try to take it as a workout, becuase if I really try to race it, I'm just going to be dissapointed. I suppose that's a weakness of mine though. Even if you do have someone running under 15 in a road race, it's highly likely that everyone else within 2 to 3 minutes is going to be VERY spread out (so more power to the dude who just broke 15 by himself). Maybe road races are a lot more competitive in other parts of the country though. And for what it's worth, here is my last 5k, but I suppose it was on an indoor track (though I did fall flat on my face with 2 laps to go...long story). I'm #37 under the men's 5000.
