The official YouTube channel of the Wanda Diamond League - the major global series of athletics meetings. The Wanda Diamond League encompasses 32 Diamond Disciplines, following a championship style model. Athletes earn points at the qualification meetings to qualify for the final of their discipline. Each of the disciplines is staged six or four times before the Final. At each of the 14 qualification meetings, Athletes are awarded 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 points for ranking 1st to 8th respectively. The top 8 or 12 Athletes (depending on the discipline) will be awarded a start at the Final. In case of a tie, the best legal performance of the qualification phase wins. The winner at the Final of each Diamond Discipline will become "Wanda Diamond League Champion" and be awarded a Diamond Trophy, USD 50'000 prize money and a wild card for the World Athletics Championships (certain conditions apply).
When is the last time an announced fast-paced 5000 ended up as planned? On the men's side I remember Florence in 2021 was announced as a sub 12:40 attempt (why not just wr at that point) and Jakob ended up stealing it in 12:48 lmao.
It was only last season we had a lot of low 12:40's at the beginning of the season. So it may happen tomorrow. Depends on weather and possibly bonus money.
bigger question is if they have pacers who can take them through 3k or so at 12:41 pace
Addisu Yihune is listed as a pacer and is in sub-13 shape (he ran 13:01 in one of the China DLs with sub-optimal conditions). So the only question is really that 4th km. If anyone takes it on this race will be 12:43 at slowest, and I might anticipate a 12:38-12:40.
It's probably going to be raining. That's not optimal for a world record.
Looks like light rain and cool temps. Terrible sprint weather (400H might be 47+ and 100m men 10.10+), but if the rain isn’t heavy that’s pretty perfect.
Last year was a crazy year for the 5000m. A total of 18 men went sub-13, and 8 men went sub-12:50. A total of 38 sub-13 times, and a total of 14 sub-12:50 times. 7 sub-12:45 times. Yet no one ran sub 12:40 (Aregawi did 12:40.45). It remains an elusive barrier. It has only been done 4 times, by 4 different men. Cheptegei did it once, Bekele did it once, Gebrselassie did it once, and Komen did it once. Would love to see it happen again tommorow. Maybe even the first race where we see two men go sub-12:40. I'm crossing my fingers for optimal conditions and pacing.
If the pacing target is 12:41 (maybe to beat the meeting record), then an even pace would be 7:36.6(2:32.2 per km). Still this, would likely be the second fastest start to a 5000m ever, and would allow for a time even faster than 12:41 with a fast close.
Do you think that the race will actually go out in ~ 7:37? I could see 12:40 still being broken with a start as slow as 7:43. Still, 7:40 requires a 2k finish sub 5 which is just as dreadfully difficult.

also Yomif Kejelcha, Jacob Kiplimo splits are leader-to-leader as I was unable to find exact split times on any results site. I had to resort to the this . Also Bekele ran 12:40.18 in Paris-St-Denis Meeting Gaz de France - 01.07.2005, but I can't find splits or a youtube video. The results can be searched for using mens 1500m and 2005

You have to also think this is a de facto selection race for Ethiopia. That incentivizes Kejelcha and Gebrhiwet to lay down a huge time. They know Barega is lethal in championship 10Ks. Aregawi has been running very well too. So those 2 guys will be fresh and dangerous, and nothing can be taken for granted in their 10k trials. You don’t want to leave an attainable time for Mehary or Haile Bekele. We’ve seen how fast Haile Bekele can go and that Mehary is improving rapidly. For those reasons, I doubt they screw around.
Hot take: "Good news for Grant Fisher" if they set the WR. If anyone is in 12:30 shape now, can they really be expected to hold it or be in 12:20 something shape over two months from now in Paris? Exact reason the fastest Ethiopians don't consistently win more medals.
I as a fan would love to see it, but in an Olympic year it's hard to imagine anyone running 12:35 in late May. Just my opinion.
Bekele ran his 12:37.35 WR on May 31 of an Olympic year, for what it’s worth.
That's true, I remember that. I'm wondering if that's why his coach thought he was actually a much faster 5k runner, simply because he ran that so early in the season. We will never know I suppose.
