That team has like 12-15 distance athletes at the Regional meet. Someone with more time than me can figure out how that stacks up against other distance schools but that is a lot.
What is the world are you talking about? This came up in conversation today with my coaching buddies and have never posted or seen anything posted about it. Are you a bent out of shape NAU coach who keeps injuries a normal thing at NAU.
NAU had no women at NCAA’s outdoor last year and might sneak one in this year. Not a good situation for a number one ranked women’s cross country team.
I don’t think Mike Smith gives a sh!t about the women
you're right, they only won the Big Sky Conference Championship by 106 points. if it wasn't for all their injuries and underperforming they would have won by by 110. I'm surprised NAU didn't fire Coach Smith and dismantle the entire women's team after such a shameful performance.
I went back and looked it up. NAU only had a 200m runner , Nico Young in the 5k and Colin Sahlman in the 1500m last year at NCAA’s. Not a single women and they could possibly only get 3 maybe 4 to NCAA’s this year. I’ll admit I thought it was a BS post , but looking back I’m wrong. Maybe NAU distance hype is a little overrated. I never really thought about it
Say what you want but NAU women are injured or underperforming
that’s facts

Winning Big Sky is not a top NCAA program bragging right. I hope that was a joke and you’re being sarcastic

True.
Maggie Congdon was running 2:02 low and 4:30 flat in January and February only to have Smith have her double the 8 & mile at indoor Nationals with prelims and finals two days apart and 8 & mile final events 30 minutes apart where she ran 2:06 high and 4:36...for last place in each.
Then barely able to run outdoor season and not anywhere close to her indoor fitness.
Mike Smith has yet to develop both W & M to equal success like Mark Wetmore has

Bosley is never around in Track and what happened to all those transfer women in Cross Country. It’s not a good look. It’s all about running the junk out of everyone at 7000ft and praying they don’t get hurt.
I agree It’s not impressive at all. NAU has an odd bunch of transfers. They don’t seem priority is women’s track at all. It’s all about running them into the ground for cross county and whatever happens in track who cares.

What you’re not impressed with winning NCAA’s in cross country and only having Young and Sahlman go to NCAA’s with the entire women’s team getting left home.
This is exactly what’s happening at BTC and Oregon. With a pro group and head college coach either the college team or pro group will suffer. You can’t do both at the equal capacity. They can try all day long but it will always be someone getting the short end of the stick.

Last year (2023) NAU had A. Reiss finish 8th (last first-team All-American spot) in the mile at indoor nationals.
This year Congdon was 8th in the 800 and 9th in the mile. You could look at those finishes (last or almost last) as poor performances, or you could find it fairly impressive that she was able to qualify for the final in two events at indoor nationals.

felt bad for Cogdon, she qualified for both but the finals were scheduled 45 minutes apart. you could tell her legs had nothing left.
