my parents are all worked up about sending me to a boarding school for my last 2 yrs of high school since all the public and even private schools around us are pretty bad. i do have some influence in the decision making process and wanted to know which ones had good running programs. right now i am a 4:38/9:52 guy and really hope to improve over the next two years.
Several in the NE are very good. Loomis chaffee in CT does a good job as does Hotchkiss. Northfield Mt. Herman's used to be pretty good up in MA. I am sure some recent grads will offer some better info
Has anyone ever been sent to military school?
All through grade school I was always getting in trouble and screwing around in school. My parents had enough of it and said they were sending me to military school for high school. I really thought they were bluffing and weren’t going to do it until my old man had the car packed and loaded me up in and drove me to Indiana to drop me off at Culver Military Academy. I realized the seriousness of the situation as we got closer with every mile and began to plead for another chance. By the time we got there I was sobbing and begging him to reconsider. I was given one semester to clean up my act and there would be zero tolerance for screwing up. I was definitely scared straight and thank goodness the high school I did attend required participation in a club or sport and I got involved in running XC and track. I ended up doing pretty well in school and also with the running. I was just basically bored, stunk at all the traditional sports with a ball, and had no outlet to channel my energy prior to high school. Glad things worked out they way they did.

Deerfield Academy-wicked smart, Nick Blixt, a great runner is a senior there now, he's like 8:55 for 3000 I think.
Cushing Academy- Hey, sintayehu Taye is a sophomore right now and he is not going anywhere. If you want to train with the best, he's a 4:09/9:00 guy, so that's on option. I think his brother is only a junior as well
Northfield-as suggested above, a terrific place to run, but I believe they have had limited success the past few years. Frank Shorter went there though. They have great coaches I hear.
Phillips Exeter Academy-I think has one of the best distance programs right now in the new england prep school world.
Sorry I don't know more outside of new england, but, hey you could always go to Mission Prep in Cali and run with Jordan Hasay.
Cushing has a good distance thing going. Sanchez and Tayes in recent history. Good coach (Ince).
A buddy of mine from HS had transferred from Exeter to finish at my private school on the west coast. He was a fantastic runner.

No knock on Ince, I know nothing up his coaching, but the Tayes were awesome before they got there (4:09 and 4:10, 9:01 for Sintayehu) and Sanchez was already one of the best in the nation before he got there.

Choate in Connecticut seems to have the most consistently strong program in New England. I think it would be worth your time to contact their coach and see what he has to say. With your current times, I believe that you would do well.
Fork Union Military Academy, in Fork Union, Virginia. They've had 4 or 5 athletes qualify for the mile at the Millrose Games, several guys (can't remember how many) qualify for Foot Locker Nationals, and they have a stacked program right now. At NIN their DMR finished 2nd behind Saratoga by .03 seconds. The anchor on that team is a junior and split a 4:13 1600, then came back the next day to run a 1:53 800 to get 2nd behind a guy who's run 1:51. They also made Kippy Keino into a 9 minute 2miler a couple years back, and last year they graduated a guy who topped out at 9:25 in the 3200 (I personally watched this guy go from being about a 5:20 miler to a 9:25 2miler.) I bring up the point of this last guy just to assure you that they not only have success with extremely good athletes, but also in developing guys that are not studs - those coaches know what they are doing. I think you can board at Bellarmine Prep in San Jose, CA. They have a pretty good tradition out there.
St. George's School in Vancouver, Canada would be a good choice. They won the provincial team title in track and cross country last year.
