What kind of training would a high school runner is focusing on the 400/800 do? I guess I am asking on behalf of my brother. He has the same HS coach as I had, so I kind of know the stuff they are going to be doing. Probably on the track at least 3 times a week. No periodization, no noticeable progession throughout the season. Probably just random workouts pulled out of Runner's World, and i am not kidding
Now, my brother is a pretty good runner (12.0, 24.0, 53.1, 2:08, 5:00) as an 8th grader. His training was moderate, but for the most part aerobically based- no big miles or anything 20 per week probably, on the track twice a week. He plays other sports, so he's not specifically training for track year round.
This year, the HS coach wants him to train with the sprint group, but he will race the 400/800, which are the races he likes. I just foresee him only getting about 10-15 miles per week in and very little aerobic-type work at all. I told him to do whatever the coach has for workouts and then add AM runs and a weekend long run to try and reach 30 miles per week. Is this good advice, or is this going to be too much if he is on the track 4 times a week??? What advice would you give regarding the track/interval work? Go as you feel???
I'm not going to overstep my bounds, as I am now a coach and I don't want to try to "tell my old coach how to train" his runners, but my brother is always asking for advice and wants to make sure he's doing the right stuff.
