After 1999, he could never run super fast in a championship race again. Just like ngeny, Josh would have overtaken him in the last 300 in probably any year listed above.
I’ll give “super shoes” and modern tracks about 1 second for a 1500 meters. They make bigger impacts for longer distance races like the 10k, but have less impact on the 1500 meters. Super shoes have not made any significant impact on races 400 meters and less.
Supershoes have a negligible effect on 1500m racing. Josh kerr ran a 39 second final 300m and won in 3:29. El Guerrouj would have never been able to do this in a championship race in the years I mentioned.
This is not as crazy of a take as the rest of you are making it out to be. El G was a lot like Ingebrigtsen, with the same strengths and weaknesses. If you believe Ingebrigtsen was at full strength in that race (which you may not), then I don't see any reason why the same things couldn't have happened to El G.
Maybe El G/Ngeny were a stronger duo that Ingebrigtsen/Kerr, but not THAT much stronger.
The first sentence is a strength not a weakness. With the tactic of not going to the front until later in the race, El Guerrouj would be primed to beat Kerr. Kerr is not an extraordinary gear-shifter or last 100m sprinter. He beat Jakob because Jakob was sick and was stubborn with frontrunning. Even then, he got caught running extra distance with Jakob warding off his attacks initially. Jakob had a rough last 150. Against El Guerrouj in 2003 form, he’d have to execute the pass much better and even then watch the World Final and it was a tall task to beat.
Kerr was not an extraordinary gear shifter? He blasted a sub 13 100m to completely gas Jakob while passing him at the end. Why would he have to execute the pass much better? El Guerroujs final 300 in that race was only a 40.5. With that fast penultimate 100 he would have beaten el guerrouj as well in 2003.
Also let me not be mistaken, this in no way means Kerr is better than El Guerrouj as a 1500m runner. I just don’t believe that he could have won against Kerr in budapest based on his later world championship wins in his career. Kerrs performance is akin to el guerroujs 3:27 race in 1997 where nobody in history you can really argue would beat him there

A sub 13 is not blasting and he hardly blew by Jakob…it took a while. El Guerrouj in 04 ran the last lap in 51.91. Do the math on the average there. The difference in the El Guerrouj 03 race is he going hard for more than 1 lap. Kerr would have to hang with it and have enough to surge by. That is different than getting by a sick Jakob who slowed the pace somewhat to preserve for his last lap.

Are we supposed to be impressed by that? El G:s WR is sub 14 seconds for every 100 meter.
