I wanted to get some consensus on this topic about copying training from elite runners. This board is full of threads about the training of elites and I'm sure many of us have looked at that and adopted workouts or training plans. But sometimes this can be a disaster, as even when adjusting paces the workload can sometimes be way too much. But I do think there is a lot to learn from copying the homework from the smart kids, so to speak, so my question is what are your biggest dos and don'ts when copying a training plan from faster runners?
One aspect I always try to copy is time at pace, rather than distance. So say I copy a training program from a 3:50 miler and they do 12x 400 in 56 off 90 seconds rest. So that's a little less than 12 minutes at mile pace range. That, to me, is the important training stimulus, so rather than having a novice runner (5:20 miler) run 12x 400 off that rest, you can have them run 9x 400 in 80" and achieve the same time at pace.
I think it also helps to be more generous with recovery days than most elites are. I think it is generally underrated how good elites are at recovering from hard sessions and the compounding workload can easily break the less talented who are copying the plan day to day. It can also be worth remembering that elite runners are often training to run multiple rounds of high level racing, rather than just a one off race or lower level races so they need to adapt recovery to that end.
But what do you think? When you look over elite training what are your takeaways and what do you adapt to your own training?
