….just now in Oklahoma! Schultz’s 1986 world record has finally gone. Oklahoma is to discus throwing what La Chaux de Fonds is to sprinting…..

That was the oldest world record in men’s track and field.

i know this will probably pass over the heads (no pun intended) of most of the people on this distance running board but i can’t believe it. this is a monumental world record. 74.4 is staggering. breaking the old record by .3m is even more ridiculous. nearly a 3 meter PR as well.
Obviously that facility has incredibly discus-friendly winds and has, with each passing year, attracted more and more world-class throwers. While not EVERYone smashed their PR there this weekend in the men's and women's DT, a lot of throwers did so.
That said, Alekna is obviously the most awesome young talent in the discipline ... with, of course, a legendary father to follow. That can be bad or good, but it seems like it's been good for him. Wjho knows if he'll top 74m or even 73m elsewhere, but he'll be battling for global medals each Olympics and World Champs for awhile, no doubt.
Maybe next year, we'll see Kristjan Čeh, Daniel Stahl and
Laulauga Tausauga and Valarie Allman there as well.

How does practice count?
discus
If I recall correctly the previous world record seemed to occur in similar circumstances (ie not much crowd, out in the throwing field). I would love to see this record broken again at a Diamond League or a Championship
Yep, Virgilius must be proud.
So we now have competing the WR-holders in men’s SP, DT, and PV. How about that jav?😁
Pretty amazing.
All 6 of his throws were of 70m or better. ALL SIX. Greatest series of throws EVER.

Wow, that's incredible! I had heard of the younger Alekna, but had no idea he had any chance at the WR.
Absolutely incredible

The previous records was on the books since 1988. All things considered - the winds, the relaxed atmosphere, Aleknas incredible performance, we might not see anybody go 74m for a while. Hope I'm wrong , but 74.41 might be on the books for years.
absoLUTEly don't give a flying f**k about this.

If he doesn’t get drug tested and files paperwork doesn’t even come close to ratification.
And a good article on Alekna from last year before Budapest:
That's crazy. The longest discus throw ever out of all the top discus throwers to ever complete, and you literally hear about 3 people clapping like, nice job bro!
