Seems to me they were on good terms at least fairly recently, I believe in the interview after Kiplimo won the NYC half last year he was asked if it felt good to beat Cheptegei. He responded something like "Whether he wins or I win, it's good." That would indicate at least there they were on good terms.
That being said, they are Uganda's two biggest superstars, so wouldn't surprise me if there was a rivalry between the two
They seemed pretty in sync on a shakeout run in Central Park together. And Cheptegei went to his mother's funeral a couple years ago and used to train or still trains with Kiplimo's half-brother Victor who won the marathon world championship in Budapest and who's said Chep is the athlete he most looks up to. If there's animosity, it's a familial kind.
