Recently I was the number 1 seed for the 1600m at a meet by a good 5-6 seconds. I let this get to my head however, and lead the pack for three laps, at a pace that was moderate and way behind my target pace, then was mentally and physically drained when the bell lap came and gave up 3 spots to finish 11 seconds off my PR. How should I run this smarter? I understand the "sit and kick" method which works well enough but since I had the presumed best time, what would have been the smarter way to run it?
