Molly Seidel will officially become an ultrarunner on April 26, 2024 as she makes her debut ultra race at the Canyons Endurance Run 50K trail race. Previously she did a shorter 28K trail race but this will be her first time doing an ultramarathon distance.
Is Molly giving up on road marathoning with the numerous supposed injuries she's had over the past few years? She doesn't seem to have the durability to handle the road.
My buddies who run both road marathons and trail ultras feel that they recover much faster from trail races than a marathon (even 100k’s). This might help her given the constant stress fracture risk. It’s her type of crowd too. Good for her if this indicates a switch.
This is probably a good move for her. I think she’ll do well as Canyons is a fairly fast and non-technical race. I imagine she’s aiming to qualify for OCC, which she’ll do with a top ten finish.
Just finding new ways to get paid. Nothing wrong with that and an Olympic bronze medalist participating in trail ultras give those races a lot of credibility. Look at this way: when she hits age 40, she will still be a running celebrity and could be earning good money on the trails. Most of her haters today will be fat ex-runners, overworked suburban dads without time to properly train, and whiners complaining about the state of the sport.

how would running farther be better for getting away from injuries?
she has been a decent 10k runner which would be the smarter direction to go if running marathons is beating you up. and i know the usual progression is the other way.

All power to her if this is the direction she wants to go. What I wish though is that she'd just state what she's doing a little more clearly (I know she doesn't owe anyone anything but we get all these incomplete stories that just give rise to wild speculation).
For instance, she records a podcast with Julia Hanlon (sp?) "The Build" post Orlando trials in which she details the horrific state of her knees leading to the last minute scratch from the race yet here she is running a 50k (albeit on a softer surface). In the summer of '22 she scratched from Worlds at the last minute with some kind of sacral/ hip bone problem that had her out of Boston @ mile 16 and a scratch from Nagoya but then she was running 28k (trails again) as "Molly Shapiro" weeks later. She ran the American record with a 4th place at NYC '21 but we hear later that she had a least one cracked rib (no further explanation)...
it's things like this that keep the whole show interesting I suppose but also I wish she would just tell it to us straight and stop with all the nonsense. On the other hand, she has been very open about her mental health struggles which I think has probably helped many runners, especially young women, so I do appreciate her for that.

They don't seem to be talking to or hanging out with each other anymore since November/December last year and are doing separate running activities in places away from each other. The boyfriend is doing a relay running race right now and Molly is nowhere to be found.....

the boyfriend just got out of rehab recently so many thought they were done. but I think he's recently been taking some photos (he's a professional photographer I believe?) of some Flag runs with a bunch of different women from different groups/ with different sponsors, unless I'm misremembering, so that leads me to think maybe they're just doing a more lowkey vibe? lord knows. his tattoos are kind of wild though. puts Jakob to shame.
