hi, i’m a sophmore 800m runner and i’m doing a 600TT all out on friday and i have no idea how to pace it. I’m currently in 1:55-58 ish shape, not quite sure, I know it’s a big range but it’s an estimate. how should i pace it? I was thinking i go out hard in like 27.5-28, hold and relax for 200 at like 29 and then gas the last 200 with everything i have and collapse over the line. also bonus question; what’s the 600m indicate for an 800m ? for example if i run 1;25 am i in 1:55 shape? i’ve heard of you add 30s to a 600tt it’s your 800m time
Your pacing plan is pretty good. I'm not sure that 1:25 is worth 1:55. Athing Mu ran 1:23 when she wasn't in 1:55 shape yet. Males seem to have better speed endurance though, so you might pull it off.
Best way to run a 600m is for your first 400m to be in that 2-3 seconds slower than your all out race pace range. Then the final 200m is just a battle to the finish line. It’s like how you relax a bit on the backstretch of a 400m race but you do that for 300ish meters instead.
Yeah that rule makes no sense of course. And anyone who thinks a 1:2x 600 time trial indicates 1:2x + 30 in an 800 race is putting a lot of trust in the adrenaline/competition boost from the race, which varies between individuals.
A decent rule for 800 runners (not 400 runners, not 10k runners with no sprint speed) would be to add 2.5-3.0 seconds to your 400m pace for the 600 to get an 800m pace. Example: 1:30.0 600m would be worth about 2:05.0-2:06.0 for 800m.
Actually I’ve gone ahead and broken this down further:
Think of it like a long 400, not like a short 800. If you try the latter, you’ll leave some in the tank. If you aren’t a little scared that you won’t hang on, you didn’t get out fast enough. Just trust yourself and realize the last 300 will go by REALLY fast.
