For context - She would not have even made NCAA outdoors in 2022 for 5k, but a year later would be shattering the CR. She would have beaten Lisa Kolls 10k CR by over 40 seconds!
She's coached been coached by Ross Cairns for years. She has that classic British runner background: lots of local and regional XC, low stakes, low pressure. It's very different in the UK compared to the US. No one here cares at all about who holds the school mile record or whatever. It's all just about racing, no focus on times until the athletes are approaching the pro circuit. Jake Wightman was much the same, very average times as a junior compared to a lot of US athletes, but he was learning his trade. But Keith was winning XC races for the last couple of years and has moved through the levels - Liverpool XC (the big one in the UK) and World XC last year, then winning Liverpool, Cardiff Cross, and Euro XC this year.

It's not like she is running fast - even a hobby-jogger like McColgan ran 30 minutes. Really it is just that a handful of Americans are running okay and the rest are juicing (just protected by USATF and the NCAA).

McColgan is a bit of an enigma. Was some potential lost from the consequences of getting wrapped up with the steeplechase in her younger years?
At this juncture, I think the chances of “hobbyjogger” McColgan medaling in the 10000m at Paris are greater than for any American.
She purchased a second-hand Arc Trainer for her home, and had to put it in the laundry room due to its large size. If she starts consuming Kombucha, 👀 look out.
