Damn, I only made $970 as an assistant last year.
In Kentucky (in our school district)
High School Head: $4400.00 (based on years experience--I have 8)
High School Assistant: $2300.00 (based on years experience)
There are high schools in the area that make significantly more and LESS. Like 900.00 for assistants.

How much do you make for teaching? I think you need to throw that in there too.
Take everything Nikki Sixx says with a grain of salt (or cocaine). He's still coming down from his decade-long drug high, known to the rest of us as the 1980's.
I have 10 years of experience, and I made 1400 for cross and 2900 for track. Head coach in both. No reward for success. (We have had 10 conference titles, 4 state titles, and multiple individual champions). I make the same as a girl's cpach with 7 kids and no success.
Who does this for the money anyway?
I coach HS. (In case that wasn't clear).
Actually, this person seems to know exactly what they are talking about. If you are talking about a power conference school like Arkansas, Florida, etc, then of course they will get more. However, 38k is just about right for most DI head coaching positions (especially if its just men as the poster indicated).
I was offered a D-1 head men's & women xc and trk job and it paid 48K. The program was a low-end D-1 program. I am not sure what the assistants would have been paid as I turned it down before we got that far.
I make $12+K for three HS seasons (head boys/girls xc, head girls indoor, asst. outdoors). Add another $69K for teaching.

I don't teach. I am a para-professional. But--my brother is a football coach at the same school, with the same years experience and he makes 2000.00 more a year.
I am not complaining--but as a head coach--I feel like I should make more.
In all fairness--the teachers at the school DO make more money than I do (if they have the same experience). Which I don't necessarily agree with (especially with my background/performance/level of education. But--if I were in this for the money, I would have quit a long time ago.
Holly shit are you kidding me?I know a lot D-I Head Coaches who would give their left Bongo for $48,000.00 but then again I just know the bottom half of D-I.What school was it?
Hey Coach Caboose,
I would rather not say what school, but believe me when I say they suck! Unfortunately, I think they will continue to suck under the coach they ended up hiring. Not good! I coach at a different division now and make the same money for the same job, but my program would kick their butt. Actually, my program would probably win their conference.
Caboose,
I like that, "their left bongo." I will use that if you don't mind. By the way, our D-1 staff at a mid major makes
-Head $72,000-3x assistants $34,000. We also have graduation and performance incentives that are tied together, i.e. you don't get one with out the other.
Many ncaa schools in the south average about $40,000 for being head coach of one program such as track, if they are also head coach for xc I belive they would make double but I am not positive.
Texas womens head track coach received a $15,000 bonus for winning nationals last year. Assistants received $5,000. I assume they received the same or more this year.
also bonuses for good grades

i know a d3 coach in the northeast (lil more cost of living) gettin round 50,000 to coach men and women
This question, although a good one, will never give you a concrete answer. There are just too many varibles. For one, every school has a different "overall athletic budget."
Each school has their own athletic director who says how much each sport gets. If you are lucky and have a AD with a track background you might get paid, but, if you don't..forget it. Each state has their own pay scale if it is a state college. Some schools have running tradition, and you get paid more, however, the pressure to produce is higher also and you may get more money for a couple of years, but, if your not winning you can take the extra cash and apply for the next job as you get canned. I could go on and on....you ask a question that can't be given an exact answer. I coached at two very similar schools in different states. One paid about 24,000 a year, and the other one paid me around 40,000 a year. Won national championships as both schools...so now you tell me!
