Hatom was a 13:13 and 27:20 guy back in Eritrea before he ever entered NCAA. While Young was definitely a high school stud he was no where near this level.
Is it 26:41.75 WJR by the late Legend Samuel Wanjiru who ran the world junior record during Kenenisa Bekele WR?
I thought of that too, but he had run slower 10,000s in Japan previously. Vincent Chepkok was mentioned by another poster, but technically he ran a 28:23 when he was 17, six years before he ran 26:51.
OAC was very much the Off Athletics Club today. Monson DNF, klecker way off the back, mcdonald injured. Could not picture a worse day.
Gonna be a tough Coffee Club next week. I love the guys but they always struggle to comment when their teammates have stinkers.
Add Jonas Raess way back in 28:04 after having run 27:26 at this meet last year.
Even Keita Satoh/Japan, who's been training this winter w/OAC, ran 27:34, six secs off his pr.
From the drone's finish line perspective, Klecker crashed to the track immediately after finishing his 27:09. Looked like a repeat of his all-out 12:54/5k race last year at BU. Only two seconds slower than what he ran last year -- but in this race he effectively had Grant as his pacer for 8k but then ran a couple of 68s and could close in only a couple of 63s.
With Grant, Nico and Woody now having the Q, Rotich just ahead of him, Nur just behind him, Sean McGorty beating him last year at Worlds, and Chelimo lurking, Joe may have just run into a brick wall of US distance talent which is simply beyond him.
In any case, Oly Trials 10k coming up in three months will be must-watch tv -- or streaming on Peacock.

Yeah, I guess this is Joe’s best race of the season but unfortunately it’s tough out there. He just hasn’t looked as good in any race I’ve seen recently and he hasn’t hit either standard (unless he has a 5k standard from last year?) with a lot of other guys racing ahead of him. So while 27:09 isn’t a stinker in and of itself, it is a stinker when the whole point of this is to get the standard and beat Americans you plan to beat this summer. I do feel for him because so far this season just seems frustrating, from not getting the 5k time in Boston, then laying an egg at Millrose, and now missing another standard just off the pack that all got it.
Catching up on the results as I've just woken up. Did anyone see what happened to Jess Warner-Judd? She DNFd but I wondered if she went out at the sub-30 pace and crashed or was she in the 30:40 pace group?

The only two women in the sub 30 group (besides the pacers) were Monson and the Ethiopian woman.
