The idea that a Chinese country can control what every teen in American is watching on a daily basis beyond crazy. But I'd much prefer an outright ban period as I think social media is terrible for teens, plus big tech has enough power already.

I read an article today about the explosion of kids in the 12 years old range who are already on weed. Combine that with this garbage social media like Tik Tok and we're basically raising an entire generation of drug-addled morons.

Problem with social media is that by the time everyone follows suit the next big thing has come along…and probably faster than that if you start banning stuff.
i don’t think it’s feasible to put the cat back in the bag at this point- a bit of education and responsible parenting will go a lot further in net terms IMO, even if you can’t stop every teen doing stupid stuff. (That, at least, is the same as it’s always been.)

Every generation has said this about something ruining the youth. Prohibition. Rock and roll. Hippies. Weed. Death metal. Hip hop. Computers. Cell phones. Fidget spinners.
Old people having hissy fits about the latest craze "poisoning the youth" is a trope as old as time. Hilarious.

If there is hard evidence that China is using TikTok to spy, steal, and subvert, then I have no issue with a ban, but I also want to see that evidence.
What I worry about is platforms and companies being banned, handcuffed, or wiped out because of political and social whims. Neither party should be able to shut down a service or media outlet because they don't like the content. Dems should not be allowed to shutter FoxNews or Truth for having a conservative bent and Republicans cannot be permitted to close MSNBC or Facebook for being woke.
This is chilling, IMHO.

Are you saying that ALL social media is bad? Or are you saying that specifically TIkTok is "ruining people's minds" and the other social networks are OK? What's worse about TikTok?

What a joke. China doesn't even allow facebook or google to be in their country as they want to be able to control what their citizens are fed as news sources.
In a weird way, I guess one could argue they are being intellectually consistent - they want to control what the US citizens are fed as news sources as well. No way in hell would they let a US owned tiktok poison the brains of their own citizens.

I was 12 in 1978 and most of my 8th grade classmates smoked weed. Pretty sure nobody had an iPhone.
